111763, Car and driver stock speed vs. actual top speed Posted by halfasss101, Dec-01-08 01:28 AM
Hey everyone, I was just curious, after seeing in the specs page, why car and driver has registered top speed at 124mph when i've hit 140mph? Yes I am completely stock right now except for a magnaflow muffler that came on the car when i got it. Do they have a certain time limit that they have to get to top speed? If that is the case, that explains it since it took about a day and a half to get to 140 (not downhill either) I've also wondered what the top speed is at fuel cut in fifth gear at 7200rpm and does anybody know the gear limited top speed of the neon tranny swap? Just curious. Thanks

I wondered that myself. In only 2 miles I got up to 130 before I ran out of road. It wasnt a flat road either, it was up and down a bit. My goal is to take to to the airport and find the fastest it will go.

Im guessing with the stock rev limiter a 5spd should be able to hit around 155-160mph

Goodyear Eagle RSA 205/55-R16 - 89H Rated Bridgestone Potenza RE92 195/70-R14 - 90U Rated
Speed Ratings R - 106 mph S - 112 mph T - 118 mph U - 124 mph H - 130 mph V - 149 mph Z - 149+ mph Z+W - 168 mph Z+Y - 186 mph Z+(Y) - 186+ mph

Cliffs notes: If "completely stock" means you have stock tires, you're pretty lucky not to be dead. The stock tires when brand new are not rated over 130mph, but by all means, keep trying your luck.

Make sure to video tape it when you keep doing it, I wanna see the horrific crash when your tires fail. Or a part from your ten year old suspension that youve probably never touched other than to put some fanboi springs on.

Maybe i'll do that next time. But when my tires are rated to 150, polyurethane suspension bushings, Tein Flex coilovers, suspension technique sway bars, megan strut bars, and lower tie bar. I'd say its been taken care of. By the way, what have you done to your suspension?

My suspension? Nothing it isnt a race car.
My Neons had Konis, bushings, sways, etc. But it was a race car. And I still didnt do asshat things like try to go 150mph+.

well, i never took that into consideration. I do not have stock tires. I am familiar with speed ratings and don't exceed them. My suspension is done up and tires. I never took the speed rating of the stock tire into consideration. I was just referring to just the engine's capabilities. Thanks for pointing that out.

Your speedo is wrong. You were nowhere near 140mph.

111772, RE: Car and driver stock speed vs. actual top speed Posted by adamzty, Dec-02-08 09:52 AM
I read somewhere that the speed is limited at like 124 by the ECU because there are some stupid people that try to go as fast as they can on stock H tires. You need to remove the top speed limiter from the ECU, there is a tutorial somewhere that tells you how to do it, but DONT GO THAT FAST ON H TIRES!!! They will fail and you will die.

well then my speedo was also wrong. I tried maxing it out a couple of months after I bought it, the speedo said 140mph. It took a really long road at 3am on the high way. It was one of those stupid things, it got scary with the stock suspesion. The car wouldnt stop moving up and down when I would go over a little bump...

yeah. They're all wrong by an expected percentage at rated speeds. seeing 140 at 120mph is only roughly 16% off, and would be within the expected margin of error at 70mph.

damn...I always thought that the speedo was almost exact. I didnt know that it was made with a 16% error tolerance... good information Dino :)

I think I worked out gear ratios/RPM/tire size once, and on stock height tires with the std. 3.94 tranny (mtx), 7300 RPM rev limit in 5th worked out ~170 mph (@6464 RPM for ATX, assuming TC-lock, ~148mph). I'd go with speed limited by tires, though stock engine power and drag and all that good stuff may only let it hit that. I've gotten 140 before, with a stretch, and at 12psi, but it had more (stupid slow mustang), but maybe only 10mph max. I doubt at stock power level you can get 140, but ya never know.
BTW, with Neon 3.55 swap, you get 165 ATX, and 188 MTX (though something will surely break before you get that close... it's still a DSM!)

111779, RE: Car and driver stock speed vs. actual top speed Posted by halfasss101, Dec-02-08 10:22 PM
Well, it said 140 on the speedo. It did take forever to get there. I figure it didnt take too long to get to 140 on 12psi compared to mine. But like stated above there is the error margin. I didn't think about that either. So maybe I'll get my neighbor that is a cop to clock me with my speedo set on 80 with cruise control and find the percentage on that. Then adjust the speed difference on my scangauge and see if i can get a better reading.

Do you guys think the speed shown on GPS systems is more accurate than our speedos? When Im doing exactly 65 on my speedo, the GPS says about 60-62.

doing things like that is us gives us enthusiest a bad name there is a place and tmie to play and thats on the track. i use to be dumb and play on the streets but then i got older and wiser. keep it ont the track if you want to go that much over the speed limit. i like to take my car out to drive with out the cops following me. because of people driving like that it gives us a bad name.

That is why I was on an abandoned airport on my friends dad's property. No speed limit, no cars, no cops. I think thats close enough to a track. That's what its used for anyway

Amen!!! :) Hahahaha!!! 140!
Get a GPS and then you'll know how fast you really are they are less than 1 mph off if that. My Trucking Co. clocked me with my ecu and satellite and sure nuff 90 mph! I used my GPS and it was right on the money. Needless to say they turned down my truck.
