111637, EGR blockoff plates.....
Posted by Armond30, Jun-06-01 02:03 PM
where can I find them, or do I have to make some of my own?

They should be easy to make. The EGR uses a penny-sized hole at the intake plenum.. just pull the gasket out, trace it in sheet metal...

why would someone want to block the EGR?

I am tapping my little 420A for as much power as it can stand, and I dont' see how dumping 1500 degree exhaust into my intake is helping me any :(

Armond, don't do it, there is no gain whateoever, trust me. plus you will get that dumb CEL. but if you want them bad enough, I will try to find the ones that I had and I will just ship them to you, no promises here since it's been over 2 years since those suckers were on.

I beg to differ.

Although i dont want to start another discussion about "does egr block off mod increase performance" i do want to mention that in *MY* experience, after 1 year since i installed an extrude honed intake manifold system on my 420a, i took it apart again and saw how much GRIT and grease was build up on the manifold walls.

I washed, waxed, degreased, etc you name it, and everything was shiny as ever. I then installed the Mopar egr block off kit (yes mopar performance has a nice kit for around 20 bucks i think, check with your local chyrlser/dodge dealer and look for the neon performance parts) and my throttle response increased SO much that I have never gone back to installing my egr system again. Although you may not gain butt-moving HP with this mod, one advantage you will get is much better throttle response. All that build up of grit on your intake path is just not good, not to mention that the same dirt build up is hitting your map sensor, your air temp sensor, etc. Now tell me that's good? i dont think so.

And yes the CEL light bothers you initially, but now i have so many different lights lit up in my dashboard that i dont really care.

BTW armond30, long time no talk. Hows your project coming? I'll try to get you the part# from mopar, but you should be able to get it from any mopar performance shop.

I have mine blocked off and no sign of a CEL.

No CEL? Wow!

There is a way to kill the CEL with adding a resistor, I would have to look and see if I could find the procedure.

Howell Auto sells the Mopar block off kit, under the Neon section.

I with KiKu I think it will help, and once I get my manifold ported etc. I will do this. But I was thinking to not trip the CEL to get a boneyard pipe that goes from the EGR to the Manifold and cut it in half and let the gas vent to the atmosphere...

I've been hanging in there man. the main reason I dont' want that egr tube is to make ABSOLUTELY SURE there are no boost leak goblins in my car. I actually make some cheap littel block-off plates today at the machine shop hehehe. I imagine my cel will be on anyway (seeing as I won't have the factory injectors hooked up.....it will more than likely throw the cel.....did on another guy's car that has the dfi that I know), and I shouldn't get any problems with it as long as I keep the vaccuum hose hooked up. it will be liek the egr system is still there.......just not pumping hot exhaust into my manifold (I got to thinking about my I/C, and the purpose it served, then I threw in the egr theory, and it just messed up my thinking, so I decided to delete it). I also deleted the evap canister using hte same principle (all the sloenoids are still there......just not hooked up to anything.......no boost leak is going to come from that ;) ). I am bringing the motor home tomorrow, and should be dropping it in next week (I have to make sure ALL my electronics are in tact first....then comes finding fittings and stuff for my fuel system, then comes finding fittings and stuff for my nos system, then comes cutting i/c pipes to go around my abs system.....yadda yadda yadda). hopefully I should be able to fill it with oil and water and turn the key next fri.... at the latest. what's up with your car dude. I heard you are thinking about treading the holy waters fo turbo-dom hehehehe

bring it on............

Your block off mod which still keeps the egr and piping in place wont work. If you just block off the passage from the head to the egr solenoid, you will still get CEL as what causes the CEL to come on with code 32 seems to be the lack of pressure/vaccum thus generating the wrong voltage level for the ecu. I was contemplating in creating a "box/plate" that sits in between the egr and cylinder head that blocks the passage to the cylinder head's exhaust port BUT has a port that can draw in fresh air from the engine bay. Just toss in a little k+n filter and you are set. It *should* work, but havent tried it. The key here is to still draw in air so the vaccum stays the same (and the voltage stays the same) but that air wont be from the exhaust.

Now if the egr solenoid also monitors the temperature and if the temp isnt within a range it will generate a CEL...well then we are screwed ;)

On another note, i ended up taking off the gude cylinder head that was giving me 13:1 compression. The shop i had my engine rebuilt from had no clue what they were doing. You'd be shocked at the things i found throughout my second rebuilt process (that i've done myself).

I still have the je 10:1 CR pistons/crower rods in and my old cylinder head but heavily ported, got some valve train upgrades, but thats about it.

Next week i'll be buying NOS kit 05030-FI and will be having fun pumbling it onto my engine. Turbo will have to come after, probably when i get a chance to do another rebuild to drop the compression down to around 8.X:1, and waiting on another things as well. What nitrous kit are you running on your car?

vinnie, i also thought about drawing fresh-air into the egr system instead of exhaust gas but here's the problem with that.

when the engine is warmed up and running at part-throttle/light-load is one of the conditions when the egr opens and lets exhaust in. the egr closes up at WOT anyway so that's not a concern.

now imagine that the engine is chugging along at part throttle and meters fuel accordingly. when you let exhaust gas in, there isn't much oxygen content in it, so it doesn't promote a burn and therefore doesn't require much of a change in fuel supply to offset it. if you were to let fresh air in, you'd be leaning out the engine slightly more than from exhaust gas. now we all know our cars run rich to begin with and the O2 sensors trim a/f ratios at part throttle so maybe the ECU can handle the extra oxygen from the fresh air and increase injector duty cycle accordingly.

if the ECU can't handle the extra oxygen being ingested, detonation may result. there's really no way to tell if it'll work until somebody tries it. even then, unless you have a knock sensor wired up to monitor detonation, you still won't know for sure.

But the fresh air coming in will be coming together with the rest of the air stream, right? I believe the egr pipe hooks up into the throttle body BEFORE the throttle plate if i'm not incorrect.

Thus this method would be nothing but just a regular air stream coming from your intake system, no different than having the egr blocked off all the way.

The whole purpose of that is to fool the voltage, not fix detonation/leaning out problem. Now if the egr pipe airstream is NOT controlled by the throttle body butterfly i.e. it does not merge into the intake system airway, then yes you are right....

Oh, no. I didn't put a plate between the solenoid and the head. I eliminated the egr tube with 2 blank plates. one on the intake manifold, and the other on the egr solenoid (so basically, instead of exhaust gas going through the tube, it hits a metal wall instead. I just assume that as long as the egr solenoid acutates normally (with the vaccuum hose hooked up) it should be ok. I don't think the egr monitors temp. there is nothing about that in teh service manual. I got the 04430 pro race kit. I just finished bendin hte lines for it the other day.......PITA! At least it's done. now it is a pretty addition to my living room ;) should be going in the car mid next week. (If I can get everything straightened out in the car in the mean time)

well i can only tell ya the way it is on my V6 ('96 sebring lxi) and the EGR is introduced into the intake manifold AFTER the throttle body. as far as i know, the only thing introduced into the air-stream before the throttle body is the PCV system.

One flaw armond....egr CEL lights up not only because thre isnt a voltage, but the voltage is created at the correct current levels if vaccum is present. Your setup wont generate a vaccum =/

But please tell me i'm wrong =)

111653, is that bad???

will performance suffer or gas milage go down????

If anything I thnk gas mileage will go up... performance too. I think it is a matter of vacuum to trip the CEL, I'm not entirely sure though. I think by keeping thehot are out of yrou intake you might see an improvement in mileage while cruising...? But keeping the gunk out of the manifold allows for smoother airflow and cleaner intake air. Which I say add, or at least maintains the power level you have.

I don't think it has to create a vaccuum through the egr dump tube itself. From what I understand, the valve works with vaccuum through the vaccuum hose, and exhaust manifold backpressure. it will still have the exhaust manifold backpressure, and vaccuum through the vaccuum hose. The only thing I did was basically remove the egr dump tube. Chris, do you get a CEL? From having yours set up like that?
