111550, Blocking off the EGR Posted by Avenger, Jan-25-02 03:41 AM
I know some have you have done it. I remember there being a post of where you can buy the EGR block off kit (came with a plate and a few other things). I tried searching for it but couldn't find it. Can anyone post a link to where you can get it?
Also, to everyone that has done it ... any improvements? any side effects? is car boosted or NA? and what year is your car? Thanks.

I got the kit from a Mopar dealer. There was a piece of the kit that I didn't use, a big rubber grommet looking thing. At the time I was going to bore by throttle body (did) and hone my manifold (haven't yet) and I didn't want it covered with black crap afterwards. I didn’t notice any performance improvements, but it does keep hot gases from re-circulating through your engine. The only side effect that I have noticed is a CEL light, but I took the bulb out soon after. HOWEVER, I do have a data logger to check error codes. I don’t really recommend taking out the CEL bulb unless you have a way to check and determine if you car is throwing codes. BTW: I am NA and my car is a 99GS.
Hope this helps.

Just use a piece of scrap metal and drill holes in it and thats all you need. A lot cheaper than $60 kit which is the same thing.

Howell sells the kit also. I would imagine CNNP does too.

I don't mind paying to get a kit that I know will fit. I'd rather not have to do any fabircation of my own to do this. Just to be on the safe side.
Very descriptive and very helpful Kory.

Definately go with the Mopar kit, worked great for me. And $60? Try $30-$40.
I have low EGT's now with the block off installed except maybe at highway speeds.Worth it for me not to mess up the p&P manifold and disrupt air flow.

$40...no thanks....scrap metal works just fine for me...

Scrap metal works great, especially since it cost $0.00 and took 5 minutes to cut it with tin snips.

Why don't you guys just eliminate the egr system completely. It really isnt necessary to have it.

111560, RE: Blocking off the EGR Posted by tim97rs, Jan-26-02 01:58 AM
Can you remove the whole tube from head to intake and block off the openings? it would sure be a lot easier for me to hook up my N2O lines. what about that in-line thingy that sends a signal to your ECM so you dont get the CEL? anybody know anything on that?

111561, RE: Blocking off the EGR Posted by Michael_97RS, Jan-26-02 11:20 AM
Dave that's exactly what we are talking about. You can't removing the tubing and solenoid until you have something to block off the openings in the Head and Manifold.
Tim, there is supposedly a way to wire in a resistor so the ECU doesn't trip the CEL... I need to find out how to do that. I don't like my CEL being on constantly, though I'm getting used to it.

1.2K ohm resistor, with a high wattage rating. No CEL.

Is there a resistor that will work for the O2 sensor on a obd 2 car with a test pipe?

I have a gutted cat with no CEL because of that, I do have a CEL for the EGR though

This is what we did to block off the EGR. Took the EGR pipe off. Cut off the ends, welded them shut, and put them back on. No more EGR. :) Next up ... test pipe. :)
