I've read some previous posts in the past about removing the EGR pipe or system, and I'm just a little curious. For those of you that's done this mod, is there any benefit from this mod, besides saving space? Any side effects? Any noticeable performance gains or loss?

Egr? I may be wrong, but isnt that the thing recalled? I had mine removed, under recall, but Chysler a year ago or whenever. No real notices in performance or efficiency etc. They just took it out and zapped the computer with who knows what. Car was fine before recall, car is fine after.

I don't know if there was a recall or not but from what I have read, some people say that they noticed no loss or gain from it. They just have a cleaner tb and intake manifold. They do say that sometimes the cel will come on but they have a fix for it somewhere in one of the topics.

what part of the EGR are you guyz talking. are you talking about the whole thing like the EGR canister soilden that is infront of the car by the passanger headlight and it goes back to the fuel tank and to the throttle body and to the little thing by the header that sticks out.. cause right know i am having problems with the whole EGR thing and if thats what you are talking about i am goin to take that shit out. sorry if this makes no sense!!!!

The EGR is that little selonoid that is near the headers. It takes the exhaust gas and blows it back into the intake. The reason for this is emissions it prevents some the unused gas from being deposited into the air. However it increases intake temps. so removing will lower the temp of the charged air. Those in theory more power due to colder air. But I wouldnt expect a noticeable gain from it. As far as loosing power you shouldnt loose any power maybe gain like 0.5 to 1 Hp if that. However you may notice a decrease in gas mileage because the fuel that doesnt get used the first time around wont be recycled through the system.


And even if there was a recall on the egr they wouldnt remove it that would be against the law for them to do. Part of the requirements for car dealers is to make sure that all emissions related parts are functional.

I'm mainly referring to removing the hard EGR pipe that goes from the head to the intake manifold, and cap up those openings. Twice, my wire harnesses have sagged down and they got melted on the EGR pipe, that's why I'm considering removing it.

Yeah you can just remove that hard pipe and use some material to block it off. Basically just make a cap shaped like the gasket out of some material that could withstand the heat. only down side is that you are going to get a CEL once you do this and unless you find a way to dissipate the exhaust gas somewhere else there is no way around the CEL.

Yes there was a recall. They took it out and zapped the ECU so there was no CEL. And capped off the hole on the airbox.

Oh... My bad

I have taken out that metal pipe, and cut some metal plates to fit, and used new gaskets to seal it all off. I have a CEL that comes on for EGR insufficient flow, about every 2 days or so. If you are 97+, there really is no way around that, since the ECU does a flow check of the EGR system using the Idle Air Control Valve. The benefits of doing this is it will def help you to not burn up any more wires; it will keep your intake manifold clean, instead of carboned up, and I noticed a slight drop in EGT's, esp on the highway cruising (about a 50 to 75 degree drop). The only downfalls as i see it: Just a bit more engine warm up time when its cold, as it will also use a bit more gas, but not a whole lot; you get the CEL. I could not really tell any significant difference in the way the engine ran with or without it on there...Seems to run a tad bit more rough right when its cold started, like over night, but once its all warmed up, it runs great..I'd say its a good mod to do if you dont mind the CEL.

For those who live in sates with emission testing....will you pass with this mod? I got a 401 code and was considering removing it. But don't want to if it will cause me not to pass emissions.

If there's emission testing, you'll definitely not pass the test :-(

So glad that I live in Florida :-). dont ever have to worry about that shit anymore.

i just did mine like this on my '98rs
and i get no more CEL. i have the whole pipe removed but left everything else except the hose that was connecting where the vac. caps are.
