.. if i take the battery and put it in the wheel well and i run the power / ground to it is there any additional risk? (like gases being poored into the car killin me?) .. just curious thanks

batterys do put off gasses, but it souldnt be enough for you to even notice it. make sure the wheel well isnt air tight too, if your just going to put the cardboard thing back on top youll be fine. also make sure you put something between the battery and the metal in the trunk to prevent it from grounding out. and tie the battery down so it dosent move around, the last thing you want is battery acid all over your trunk. hope this helps.

Bad advice. There is a reason why the NHRA has strict guidelines for battery relocation, and they all increase the safety of the vehicle in a crash. Any setup is fine when the car is driving around normally, but when the shit hits the fan (or the car hits the tree), the extra precautions that you take will pay off. The following is a list of rules prescribed by the NHRA for battery relocation:
Sealed metal box battery mounted to chassis (not just mounted to the box, no matter how the box is mounted) vent tube to outside of the car (the hatch has a few drain tubes... tee off of one of these) Battery mounts must not be of the J hook variety, or if they are, the J section must be welded closed. There must be a cutoff switch for all system voltage mounted to the back of the car. Flipping this switch must not only kill battery voltage into the system, it must also cease operation of the car. This is the only precaution that I would not worry too much about on a street car, but you will not be able to race at a track unless you do this. There must be two connections between the battery and the chassis of the car, with a minimum diameter of 3/8" (11MM or so).
Sure, it's a pain in the ass, but if the car were to be in a collision, having the battery flopping around and sparking a lot of heat off is not a good thing.

batteries put off harmful gases that could potentially kill you. Thats y the battery relocation kits come with a breather tube that goes to the outside of the car.

A Yellow Top battery is a gel cell. It isn't sealed, and under certain circumstances, can outgas. I'm just trying to show you guys that there are some serious ramifications to something that seems so easy to do. -=B-=

great advice given here to the folks who want to toss a battery in the trunk...its not a piece of cake to accomplish safely.
BUT i have one huge question. why are you people interested in throwing the battery in the trunk of our cars? why would you want to add more weight to the rear of our car, creating more ass to drag so to speak. second of all, this is a front wheel drive vehicle. most of the hi performance cars you will see at the track with the battery in the trunk are rear wheel drive cars. in that case, its not a bad idea to move the weight in the back, putting more pressure on the drive wheels. in our case, you'll create even less traction for your front wheel drive car for the weight you take from the front and move in the back.
if you were into autox i suppose you could argue the benefits of trying to create more of a balanced weight ratio. but if you were really into autox and that side of performance, you wouldnt be silly enough to try and compete with a 2gnt.
i hope i saved someone from a waste of time and money.

I am doing it to free up some space under the hood and to balance out the extra 50 lbs of the 2.4... And I think that a 2GNT can be a well balanced machine, with power, handling, and finesse. That's what I am out there to prove. -=B-=

oh i see, thats cool.
but as far as a well balanced machine with handling and finesse, i suppose....relatively speaking. like in comparison to stock or a 1g. i mean i have mine lowered on prokits, adjustable shocks, and bars and its a world of difference above stock. but have you ever been to an autox? i dont think youll ever see a 2g eclipse hanging with the other cars it is thrown in a class with, i dont think youll ever prove anything to that extent. im not trying to ruin your dreams or be a pesimist, good luck with everything man.

Note what Bill said and one other thing. No matter the battery, if you get in a wreck it can (and quite possibly will) break.
 Note the optima yellow top. In this case there was a city bus that rolled over it, but the same can easily happen if you back it into a wall or someone decides to drive through you.
One thing I don't understand is that the USCG doesn't require much of a battery box in a boat where outgassing and enclosed spaces are very common.

well my car esentially has absolutley no weight in the back save for the wheels axel and glass . i would assume my weight distribution is horribly off .. 65/35 or 70/30 so a relocation kit would benefit me ... but in regards to an accident .. if someone gets that far into your car ... sparks and battery acid are the least of your problems .. i would worry about a 50lb battery flying through your car .. or worse another car running through your ass .. lol
oracle was thinking why not put the battery dead center behind the rear seat ? dead center is the best weight distribution i can think of ..

I would put it in the back. We don't have the advantage of having the engine weight in the midpoint of the car, like an MR-2 or an RX-7 or an RX-8. This means that there is a higher moment of torque at any given point in a turn, which will make it harder to keep us stable then them. The engine is so far forward, though, that putting the battery in the back will not hurt the torque moment (how far the center of mass is from the center of rotation). -=B-=
