the 3 steps are magnet rotation injector re-wiring swapping wires 1 and 3 of the coil pack
2.0 timing order at start 1-3-4-2 2.4 timing order at start 2-1-3-4
2.0 crank sensor on cyl 1 2.4 crank sensor on cyl 2 that's 180 degres crank rotation, 90 degres cam rotation
2.0 magnet read positive signal when cyl 1 is on tdc , negative signal when cyl 4 is on tdc 2.4 magnet read positive signal when cyl 2 is on tdc negative signal when cyl 3 is on tdc
the 2.4 cam have the magnet 90 degres off compared to a 2.0 cam the 2.0 and 2.4 coil packs are the same model and have the same pairing 1-4 and 2-3 the cam magnet itself is the same in all chrysler 4 engines
now on our swap with 420a head we have no choice but to keep the 420a cams unlike neon owners who can use either neon 2.0 or real 2.4 cams by using 2.4 cams the neon owners have less step to do
now we need to mix a head timed for cyl 1 with a block timed for cyl 2 , not as easy as it looks the goal is to make our PCM do a 2-1-3-4 timing on the hybrid engine
when the PCM will read the crank sensor signal with cyl 2 of the 2.4 at TDC it will think that cyl 1 is at TDC , because that's what he was built for but the cam sensor will tell that the cyl 2 is at TDC because that's how the 420a cam was built
if we turn the cam magnet to retard it 90 degres cam, (counter clockwise) when piston 2 is at TDC the PCM now thinks that everything is fine with a piston 1 at TDC giving the right reading from both cam and crank sensor
the PCM will react normally by giving fuel and fire , and its software will make it fuel and fire piston 1 on its way to TDC but we need the fuel and fire on piston 2 because it's the one going to TDC
the trick is the rewiring first the injector , by cutting and soldering back wires. 1 goes to 2 2 goes to 3 3 goes to 4 and 4 goes to 1 once done when the PCM open injector 1 it actually send fuel in cylinder 2
and finally rewiring of the coil 1-3 The PCM software will make it fire cyl 1, connected to the wire 3 of the coil pack, but the engine will need fire on cyl 2 connected on the wire 1 of the coil pack swap the wire and it's done , fire on cylinder 2

i definately agree ;) thanks for the neg and pos cam angle to which piston at TDC though!! i'll have to check that sometime and see for myself

I actually have a text file with that same stuff in it already.... If it was worth me keeping on my computer and compiling myself, then this info is definately visual gold for someone else.

Thanks for clearing this up for me Alain. watching widebodied struggle to get spark has made me very nervous about doing this. I finally think that I have a grasp on this.
while we are on the subject (thread hijack) do you think that I am going to have a problem with a 2004 N/T Pt block? I still can't figure out if it has the newer crank magnet.

you could ! chrysler is moving all the engines to the new crank sensor system better check before buying I suspect that some late 2004 model year cars will have the newer 2.4 engine
if the crank sensor is close to the timming belt = old system :) if the crank sensor is close to the tranny = deep shit
as for widebodied, like onebaddsm was telling me in email, it could be the exact same problem he has last year when he did his 2.4 turbo swap, he mixed up 2 connectors on the wiring harness and blew his ECU
