So i was told that i should compress them in a vise to get all the oil out, but in the Clintons it says that They should be partially full of oil indicated by little or no travel when the lash adjuster is compressed? Witch should i do??

I'm confused. What are you trying to accomplish here? Or, what are you doing?

im puttin the head back together. I was researching onhere and everything said to place the lash adjusters in a vise and compress them to get all the oil out. But when i read the clintons manual it says that their suppost to be atleast half full of oil. So should i compress them to get the oil out or let them go and install them the way they came out??

when i pull lash adjusters out i just throw them in a container of motor oil until they are ready to go back in the engine.

I think you got your term confused for what your trying to work on...i can't think of a single part in the head they requires compression by a vise. I do know that you have to compress the timing belt tensioner. But the the only thing that can be compressed is the valves/springs.

The lifters and rockers are both solid metal last i looked, and i just looked. It might mean put oil on them and slide them in...they are somthing like hydrolically adjusted i think and require lubricant?

And you mean CHiltons manual...right? What page? I got the same one?

Your workin on a 95-99 eclipse non turbo with a 420a motor right?

So for the simple questions, just gota get us all on the same page.

everywhere I've always heard is half-full. I replaced mine when I did a rebuild, and more-or-less just soaked all of the new one's in a oil can for a few hours. *shrug*

Just throw them in a container of oil like AMM said. Thats all I've ever done and never had any problems out of mine.

Ditto. I left in a set for two years, the guy I sold the head to said they worked great!

it doesnt matter. keep em sealed in a ziplock w/ some oil, you'll be fine for years. jesse, WTF dude, adjusters can be compressed. cmon dude

I think this is another case of general information by lazy ass writers. Compressing the lash adjusters is something you do in Small block chevy V8's when measuring push-rod length and setting initial valve clearance. Most ppl don't typically worry about this on OHC motors because of the geometry of the Valve train.

How could they be hydraulically adjustable if they are solid? How would they adjust for lash if they were solid? Ugh.

Hey guys. I ordered a set of 4th Gen lifters off Ebay last week and they got here today but they look a bit funnay. The instructions say to clamp the base in a vise and give them a whack with a hammer.

How much power?

The oil channel underneath them was what i thought, origionaly adjusted them. I didn't notice the tiny little hole in the side that lets the oil in and oiut. But i did go back and looked real hard...same day i put my head back together too. That's why i even looked at this thread and them. I was about to do the same thing(put a head togehter) I was using the rebuild instructions from 2gnt and a lil from my chiltons. I decided to just coat them in oil an slide them in. I tried to compression them and they didn't budge easy but they did. They're solid lil'l boogers. Had me fooled.

Oh, it does say compress them in a vice in the Chitons manuel.

I pump mine up just like I do on all v-8's. never had an issue and they fill with oil properly much sooner.

Not pumping them in oil previously to installing them will starve the lifter tips and rocker mating surface from oil. Break in grease only goes so far and personally I wont stake a motor on 30 cents of break in grease.

I just dipped mine in oil also but they were used. I have like 2k on my motor and no problems with them, Just a oil leak from my oil pan and that damn tension pulley squealing and pretty sure I blew a leak in my power steering somewhere from overfilling *shrugs*
