110598, My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well it is time to tear apart the motor. I have alot of problems with the motor so I just decided that I will tear it apart and start my build up. Well the car is leaking oil and the trans mounts are busted up so I need to get them fixed. This does not look good, yea this is oil all over the under carage. I thought it was from the time my oil filter fell off because they did not put it on right when I went for a oil change. I see oil driping but I am not sure where it is from. There is no room inbetween the fire wall and engine so I can't see anything. I might have to pull out the whole engine.

Ouch...poor tq mounts...
How many miles and what year model? I love my car... I love Horsepower... I love reliability... So why do i own a DSM again?
|
110600, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
95GS and it has 161996 miles. It needs a head gasket and oil pan also a raditor. Oh and new mounts.
|
111233, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well I am about to start to pull the head. So far all I did was set the #1 piston at tdc then I ran into a problem turns out my floor jack is no good so now I have to wait to see if some one can loan me one. So far this is all that I got done.
|
111234, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well I worked on the car some more today. Looks like I need a new belt. Took of a few things. Took of the tb today. I am not sure what I want to with the tb maybe I will get one from a jeep and make it fit. I got sprayed with fuel dang fr had a small amount left in it. Now I need to get a jack and take off the motor mount. I am just wondering how the heck I will take off the exhaust pipe.
|
111520, RE: My 420a project Posted by teklein, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Great start!
I would definitely redo the head like we talked about.
Check partsdinosaur.com, they have a great price for the timing belt and tensioner package :thumbsup

111607, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I will be sure to do that.:thumbsup

what pipe? The downpipe? It should be easy to remove from the head, just make sure you spray the bolts good with wd40 or pblaster. You already have the exhaust mani cover off, just use an extension to unbolt all the bolts holding the mani onto the head. If you mean the bolts between the dowpipe and the cat, well good luck getting those off, they've always been a bitch for me.
BTW, if you need some new motor mounts, I may have a set for you ;) PM if interested

the bolts between the dowpipe and the cat is what I am talking about.

ouch, good luck. I usually end up just cutting them apart with a grinder and cutting wheel but then drilling those bolts out are a HUGE PITA
|
111734, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
It looks like a PITA.
|
111740, RE: My 420a project Posted by rstare, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
The bolts from the front exhaust pipe to the cat were the easiest ones for me. It was the bolts after the cat that were rusted to hell. If your replacing the exhaust then just cut it out.

111756, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I think I will take my time on my engine build. I wan't to have one of the cleanest engine bays. Think I want to relocate the fuse box and some wires and stuff. I just wan't some light mods. Let me see I am thinking header, bored tb, cams rods & pistons, valves, valve springs, retainers, valve guides, high flow fr, fpr, 3g fi, oil pan, cat back exhaust, radiator. Ideas on my build? Well my goal is to keep it on the road more than a week. Really I wan't to just rebuild every thing, I wan't to add as much hp as a could with out a turbo.

I can't be clearer when I say, you cannot do this without a tuner. The best overall choice would be MSnS. IMO, this should be one of your first mods in the progression.
|
111758, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I can't use that I have a automatic.
|
112196, RE: My 420a project Posted by adamzty, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
if you are tearing everything apart anyway, you should just convert it to a manual.

I would but my wife drives my car too and she said no.
|
112259, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well I got some more done today. Pulled out more wires and the radiator. I am an idiot I for got to drain out the oil It was cold out side so that is all I got done for now.
|
112260, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Why is there a hose going from my radiator to trans?

your trans cooler if have an atx. It will show you in a Chilton/Haynes manual, buy both if you don't have them. Its a good if you also buy the chiltons transmission manual for the Mtx or the a604.

Got bored and painted my v/c. Now I need to let it dry and sand the letters down and another coat of clear. It looks really shiney in person. I am wating on my w2's so I can take my head to a shop to be rebuilt. Before
After
|
124417, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Took off some more parts. Oil all over the im must have been from when I had a bad v/c gasket.:hmm: This car is going to tick me off already.:banghead: Did not see any oil around any area of the head so now I am not sure if my gasket is bad but it is too late now and it needs to be changed already any how. So the next step is pull off the head and look for other leaks and fix them. :aha:
Bad sri filter well the rubber part fell off.
fixed it took off that ruber part and cut half off and wraped it around the sri and then I stuck the filter in and turned it until it was stuck on so it should do for now.:p
|
124425, RE: My 420a project Posted by stracer107, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
your under cariage looks like mine covered in oil. lol. i just put 800 in my car just to drive. they always break
|
124430, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Yea I need to get that oil clean up.
|
124581, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well I did not like how rusty and how the paint was falling off this line so I had to do this. I am going to clean every thing until it looks good I don't care if it takes a year.
|
124582, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Now I am not sure if I am going to install these in the car or get rid of them and buy some more parts that I want to get for my engine.:hmm:
|
125757, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Got the car started up but the timeing is off.:banghead::notgood::sosad:
Well I decided that I am just going to take the whole block apart and rebuild it from the bottom up. As you can see it is not running good.:notgood: Atleast I know when it is rebuilt it would have all new parts and it will run pretty good.

I am going to do a compression test and go from there. Most likely everything is going to be rebuilt.

124106, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well I got some more work done to it not much but I do what I can when I have time. Took off some parts clean them up a bit. I am about to order me a 421 header soon can't wait and some other parts. Dirty parts and junk build up from all the years..
Clean this up a bit.
Took off more parts as you can see I have along way to go.

that's what I was seeing on my first engine right before it crapped out.
my new engine tests out around ~190 across the board and I've seen fresh rebuilds go over 200
lower compression builds for turbos are usually around ~180

126089, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Update well I am tired of the eclipse so I put a price tag on her. So with the money I get I will be looking for another eclipse most likely a 98 I seen a spyder and a gsx for sale at a car lot here in town that I will look into.

126123, RE: My 420a project Posted by LLs420a, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I just finished a high compression build (10.5:1), and have yet to break the new engine in. First compression check was done today and got 210 across the board. Is this normal? Thanks

Where's the bitchslap smiley when you need it?
Why the hell would you want to put GM junk in your car?
Is it possible? probably. Will it cause MOUNTAINS of headaches just trying to get it to work? Almost definitely

Like Ronin said, Chrysler does not and has never had anything to do with GM. The three big American automakers are/were Ford, GM, and Chrysler. I assume you're thinking Dodge was/is a GM brand, but Dodge was actually bought by Chrysler in the 30's to be transformed into its truck line. Then of course, they launched Plymouth & Eagle later on. And they bought Jeep's parent company (can't remember what it was) in the late 70's. So, no, GM and Chrysler are competitors through and through.

Cool, I just saved from a pillow beating. ha ha These guys do mean well, they dont want you to mess your car up.
Try, posting the 2.4 atx swap question is the A604 area.
do a search by typing 2.4 auto swap or 2.4 auto either on here or on a search engine.
You might have better luck with the search engine on a site, example yahoo since this is what I use most.
I'm really sure about the 2.4 auto swap, it would cool if it does bolt up. Its probably strong than the a604, this would interesting I have an a604.
Keep us updated on your build,

I think an SRT4 swap will work nicely But use our 420a head instead of the SRT one.
Will it be cheap...NOPE...but it would be nice

He's talking about using the auto transmission from a 2.4 into a 420a not the motor swap.

Went and bought me some basic parts 4 ngk plugs and the im gasket set and a sri filter. Next I will be ordering a radiator and some other parts I may be needing.

My wife went and bought me this. Can't wait to install all these parts.
|
126459, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well I removed the radiator and installed the ngk's next I have to install the new radiator it was hot out so I took a break and will install it when it cools down a bit.
|
126460, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well I installed the new radiator. Went to turn on the car and trans fluid started squirting out a hose so that is not good. I guess my car hates me.
|
126484, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I went and bought new hoses and clamps and installed them and it fixed that leak. so next up I need to pour in some trans fluid what kind of fluid do I use? Now I need to install the im gaske kit.

Seriously? With a whole sub section devoted to the ATX and the search feature, not to mention any number of repair manuals available to you, you are asking what fluid to use?
:rolleyes
ATF +4

No shit, it fixed it huh???
After 2 hours of chat last night, of me an mikey telling this guy atleast 25 times, his trans fluid leak was because of the shitty condition hoses/clamps and not to mention using zip ties instead of clamps on one end of the hoses, you finally decided to listen to us and put on new hoses, and your leak is now fixed.
Imagine that. Now all that name calling you were blabbing around in chat towards us, who looks like the clown now?
|
126542, RE: My 420a project Posted by EDM95, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I installed about 5 new trans hoses fixed that problem Now I need fluid. Next up look for other leaks and fix that.
Next up install the im gaskets later on buy a new oil pan my has a dent in it from where I hit a bump in the past. Maybe after I fix all the small things I will install a 4 2 1 header.

Put back on the bumper but I am going to have to take it back off because I need to make something for that plastic part I took off.

I am now going to start working on the dsm now that the weather is starting to get cooler. I am going to pull the head first so here are the pics of a fresh start and I will post updates and pics each day as I work on the dsm. Maybe it will be ready by xmas and that would be my gift to myself.;)
How it looks now.

Here we go again about to pull the head off soon as I drain all the fluids. I wonder what the damage is.:hmm:
Going to pull this off and paint it later.

No, the car does not hate you. It is called operator error - not reattaching hoses/lines that you removed in the first placed or reusing shitty condition parts. The equivalent of taking your old oil filter off and either reusing it or forgetting to reinstall a new one.
