I have a problem with my MSD ignition and I hope someone can help.

I have burned up 3 MSD Dis 2 Plus ignition boxes in the last year and I don't know why. It's hooked up right and works fine for a while and then after approximately 500 miles it dies. luckily I'm getting good at bypassing it so I can always make it home.

The only thing I can think of is maybe it's overheating. I have it mounted in the engine bay which gets pretty hot, especially with the carbon fiber hood and the Texas heat.

I'm starting to build up a stockpile of burned up boxes in my garage which is getting pretty expensive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i was under the impression these things had a bad reputation for dieing like this.. my guess is it got cooked..can u run in in cabin? and shit in less then a yr? isnt there some sorta warrnty on these?

Post a pic of how it is mounted...You dont have it grounded to metal do you?

not recommended to mount it inside the car. I have mine screwed into the battery plate ontop of the tranny. It shouldn't burn up from external temperatures unless its next to your header. Its designed to withstand 150+ degrees.

I have mine mounted under the passenger seat for 3 years now, with no probblems...

MSD boxes are known to fail due to heat, that is why most people run them in the passenger cabin.....Nascar has been locating them there for years.

Grounding them to the chassis never bothered my MSD 6AL.

You seem to be burning them out way to fast and I know Dino has his mounted there as well. look over your wiring and make sure a short isnt damaging it. Then call up MSD and try to send a few of them in for warrenty work!

Yeah MSD should fix those since they are newer. I would also be intrested in buying one if they will fix em lol. You might make some money back on the broken ones.

I have some time off during the Christmas holidays so I'll probably remove it and send it back. I'll also be changing out my shocks from KYBs to Tokicos.

I was thinking about switching to a Carbon Graphite hood that has openings in the top to allow the heat to vent a little along with wrapping the headers a little better. I don't know what kind of heat the boxes can withstand but you would think they would be designed to at least take the temperatures encountered under the hood plus some.

I thought the first box went out due to the Nology amps I had wired in but apparently it wasn't. I also smoked an MSD coil in the process.

Although I hate to waste any more money, between the timimng retard for the nitrous and the launch control I have too much time involved in the wiring to switch to a different system if I don't have too.

I did a little research on the Neon user groups since we have the same motor and some are switching from the MSD to ViPEC. Does anyone have any experience with these?
