11020, Upgrades for Lude? Posted by mjbd, Dec-30-01 09:03 AM
I already know I will be getting a CAI, not sure which one, cause nobody will comment on which is the best, but what other kinda of upgrades could I do to increase performance? I cant supercharge or NOS because of warranty, but bolt ons should be ok. Is a lightned flywheel worth it? I know my Lude puts out 200hp to the flywheel, but only like 165 to the wheels, and how about oversized pulleys? I dont know if its possible to break into the 13's without FI, or at least without a ton of money, but would be pretty happy with low 14's. How can I get there?

I would do the basic airflow mods - Intake/Exhaust/Headers. You can do pulleys and porting and flywheels and all kinds of shit but you need to have a good idea of where you are going with the car. If you want to knock seconds off your timeslips then you'll need some sort of forced induction. Super/Turbo charging is great if you want power all the time but it's expensive. Nitrous Oxide is great if you only need the power for 10-15 seconds at a time and it's cheap, but filling it up gets expensive. Any kind of FI will void your warranty. Good luck with your new baby!

I couldnt even consider FI until my warranty is up, so until then, my only options are bolt ons. I think I may have found a good one. The Venom 400, adds 25% more HP between 1000-5000 rpm range. Anyone ever used one? I was thinking a lightened fly wheel might help get more HP to the wheels. The Lude is quick now, and if I were to be running 14's, I think I may be pleased with that. If I could have the Lude running low 14's, I could chase Stang GT's, and actually stand a chance.

ok, this is what i got from a fellow lude owner for ya:
:+ :+
first off, start with lotsa decals, any company that u can get your hands on, put the sticker on your car. then stick with the stock exhaust because of backpressure issues with the honda engine but buy a body kit, and install it yourself to save money. allow the spray paint to dry before u install.
lol
stick with stainless steel headers, not the ceramic ones, dont buy aem cai, make your own for bout 150 w/ mandrel bends.
get a b&m fuel pressure regulator, not the aem, they tend to break and have issues.
skunk2 adjustable cam gears are good because they are lighter in weight. aem are too heavy.
if you run a system, get rid of the stock battery
power pullies?
stay away from msd ignition stuff the stock ignition is fine
check hondasociety.com or hondaprelude.com and preludeonline.com
hope that helps tia

You should be able to break 14's with simple bolt-ons. I/H/E/UDP.

11026, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by eclipse804, Dec-30-01 11:09 AM
50 shot of NOS will let you run 14.1 on a hot day. That's what this guy I met ran at cali speedway with just intake, headers, exhaust, and NOS. He said he runs high 13's when he can get traction and good weather.
|
11027, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by Dave_FL, Dec-30-01 11:35 AM
There is a new style prelude here that has intake, exhaust, headers. It is the type SH prelude. He ran a 15.7, 15.4, 15.5 on the runs I saw. Not so fast if ya ask me. Especially when you see how much they cost.

11028, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by mjbd, Dec-30-01 02:40 PM
He must have a auto then, cause the Lude runs low 15's stock. I would kinda feel funny racing DSM's now, wouldnt start it with one, but if one rev's on me, its on. The Venom 400 seems to good to be true. If what they say is true, that the equivelent of about 25-35 horses, which would be a noticable gain. Want to look into it more, but looks very appealing. Lets do the math, CAI=12hp, AEM pulleys=8hp, cam gears=3hp, Bosche 4 spark plugs=2hp, lightned flywheel=10hp, and a Venom 400=30hp, so with that I am up to about 225hp at the wheels, not to bad.

11029, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by eclipse804, Dec-30-01 02:45 PM
Venom 400 is a joke. All it does is trick your car into thinking you're pressing the gas pedal down more than you really are. Look at the website. It does NOT work at wide open throttle, so it does nothing when you floor it. The way it works is: Let's say you press the gas down 50% (half way down), then it will trick your car into thinking you pressed it down more, like 75% of the way down. So if you're lazy, get it. It only feels faster because you don't have to press down as much on the gas. But when you press the gas down 100%, there is ZERO gain. Their charts even show it.

Ok, scrap that thing then. Thanks for letting me know. Wow, and people really think they are getting something. Oh well, spend that money elsewhere then. Thanks for letting me know.

When you add up hp gans from CAI, exhausts, etc. It doesnt just add up like that. Most of the time the product doesnt even give the car the amount that they claim. And I dont think new plugs give any hp increase.

"He must have a auto then, cause the Lude runs low 15's stock" hmm these drivers must be amazing since even the professional mags run mid to high 15s... ludes are no faster than a gsr dood

11033, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by mjbd, Jan-01-02 03:22 PM
I think the normal time is about a 15.4 for a Lude, thats a good driver. The fastest time I have seen is 15.1 on a stock Lude. As for upgrades, I think I will do some here and there over the next 2.5 years, have it ready for 40-60 shots of NOS. If I can break 14's with just the bolt ons, then I would be happy. I would have to guess that the biggest gain I will get will be from the CAI and the lightened fly wheel, and the other stuff is less noticable.

my friend ran a 16 flat with his sport shifting lude on the track... and he was bitching about it because he said if he had a stick shift.. he coulda hit mid to low 15's... so yea...

11035, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by rfpunch, Jan-01-02 04:59 PM
I almost got a prelude when i traded my sebring. but i got the eclipse. because its a lot more expensive to upgrade a prelude, and the eclipse was a lot cheaper and its relatively cheap to boost it so i think i made the right choice. i would go with a CAI, aftermarket muffler, UDP if made, header.

11036, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by mjbd, Jan-02-02 04:33 AM
The problem is with launching the Lude off the line, not much torque, but can make up for this by reving it up and droping it in to gear, but then your wheels with spin, so its really hard to shoot one off the line. I will talk to the dealership guy before I would do any mods, it will probably be a while anyways, cause I am broke at the moment, I really wish I could run NOS, even if it was a small shot, but cant risk warranty. 2.5 years is a long time, oh well, hopefully I will be able to do the basic bolt ons to hold me over.

I found a NAKAYAMA CAI for dirt cheap on ebay, is it any good? Just wondering if you are paying for the name when you buy AEM or Iceman. Should I go with an off brand, or save and go with a for sure thing?

iceman......it's worth it! ;)

11039, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by mjbd, Jan-03-02 10:44 AM
Thanks chris, I figured as much. Iceman over AEM, will I have any problems with install?? Or is it pretty much a short bolt on project?

christ, does he look like he owns a lude? go post on hondastyle.com and ax them

I didnt mean directly with the Lude, but any car in general. I was actaully refering to how long it took on the Eclipse, so I can get an idea of how long it might take and how hard it might be to install on the Lude. So chill out Kory, I am not acking Honda specific question, but general performance questions.
|
11042, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by rfpunch, Jan-03-02 12:02 PM
the install on a prelude may be more difficult than an eclipse, or it could be easier. just depends. i put my iceman on my eclipse in about 20-25 minutes.

11043, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by mjbd, Jan-03-02 01:07 PM
Cool, not to long, but like you said, it could be differant, but hopefully not to hard.

11044, RE: Upgrades for Lude? Posted by Kory, Jan-03-02 02:36 PM
any car in general... hmmm let's see... a datsun 510 hmmm maybe about 10minutes, a 1996 420a 15mins, a 95 civic ex 25mins, etc
u see my point, your answer for your question will range from that type of car's intake system to the type of intake. you make a general question you'll get answers like this. that's like asking how long does it take to put a turbo system on a general type of car. intake is prob one of the easiest and str8 forward type of mod you can do. you have a lude and you want the best perf. for it, i highly doubt that 2gnters will give you that answer. im trying to help you out by stating the obvious. if you want to know about the switch over point of your vtec system you wont ask a dsmer rite?

I see your point, but dont usually like Honda boards all that much. Ask a question and they call you stupid. I guess there will be some questions that I will have to ask at other boards, but still prfer to call this one home. I know its kinda been them vs us, but I am not really one of them, at least the ones I have heard about on this board. Thanks for those who gave their input despite the fact that my car is alot differant than yours.
