So I need to do a headgasket (pending how my bottom end compression is, if its in good ship ill just replace the HG), and priced everything out.

Im gonna take the head off to be machined/cleaned/new valve seals etc.

Should I get a three angle valve job? What are the benefits?

Eventually I want to build a bottom end or go 2.4, so I figured might as well get the head down now. It has 253k on it :P

As I said in the chat, if you already have it apart and the price is right, it can't hurt you to get it done. 235K is a lot of miles.

I just had the valve seats regrinded when I had my head rebuilt. I thought about a 3 angle, has anyone compared the two to see the gains from a 3 angle vs just a rebuild.

Back when I was building mine, I looked into the valve jobs. I was told the stock head already has a 3-angle valve job from the factory. Is this true?

Lol, boy do I feel dumb. So what's a 1 angle valve job? Any valve job I get (or did) was always at least three angle :shrug

Um, if you are going to get a valve job get at least a three angle. I get 5 angles for mine.

according to local machine shops, some don't offer 3 or 5 angle jobs. 5 angle is only useful from what i've learned if your going 9K rpms or higher.

Yeah, I'm aware. My answer was somewhat tongue in cheek. I guess on this subject I'm a little touchy/arrogant. I just think a single grind to the face is not a valve job. I can't imagine a shop doing that (though I know some do) and just calling it a day. Especially on an engine that is so dependant on the design of air flow in the head.

And yes I do 5 angles to get that little bit more out of the engine. I also unshroud the valves and grind down some of the guide.

Im going with a three angle.

Disassemble, something with the guides (cant remember), clean everything, resurface surfaces, new valve seals, three angle valve job (he also said something about 2 angles on the valves as well), and completely reassemble everything to factory specs. He said it will look like a brand new head.

For $215.00.

Clean and surface is $65.00 and the three angle is $150.00. The rest is all included. I budgeted $200.00 for the headwork anyways :P

I know the three angle makes the head flow a little bit better, but how much, if any, of a difference does this make?

Symptom of the HG or...?

Background on the car:

The HG is not MLS that is currently on the car. Also when I bought the car 16k miles ago, I was told that the water pump went bad so they replaced it.

EDIT: Below im thinking like a used car dealer...
Now im fairly positive that did not include the HG. Im thinking like a used car dealer here... If the valves are not bent or anything, and all it needs is a water pump... why replace anything else but the timing belt?

As long as you have it apart go ahead and replace the rest of the timing stuff. PD has good prices and they ship pretty quickly. www.partsdinosaur.com
