Ok I have a brand new motor in the car with all brand new parts. I also just put in a brand new radiator and new hoses and everything. The car is still overheating. It's going up almost up to 3/4 hot. The fans seem not to come on when it gets hot like this. I am not sure why they dont come on. Sometimes when I turn the a/c on the rad fan will kick in with the a/c fan. What else could be wrong? Fuses? Relays? It's not leaking a drop of anything. What the FUCK is wrong with this car?!?!?!?!

you can always try some lemon/lime Gatorade. I run it in my engine all the time. Best thing about using that is its not harmful to the environment at all and if you spill some on your hand you can just lick it off. its cheaper than antifreeze too.

OP - If you know the radiator fan is working when the AC is turned on, there's got to be a switch, sensor, or relay somewhere that's either not connected or not working right. Considering you just put the engine in, I'd suggest double checking all your electrical connections over there. Run down that harness on the passenger side starting from the FO2S and working your way back until you reach the intake manifold. If you can confirm that your radiator fan and all those widgits near the thermostat and radiator cap are securely fastened, we can test from there.

ok the fans arent working properly.....they arent coming on when they are suppose to. everything is plugged in, changed relays in fuse box. it really only overheats in stop and go traffic. Not highway driving.....any suggestions?

probe into the wires and see if you're getting volts when its up to operating temp. if u are, fan motor's bad. odd that you say it comes on 'sometimes' when you turn on the AC though. start probing shit. lol

I'm sure you have tried this but it has not been recomended and you haven't said that youve done it but bleed the cooling system. If you have air in the system it will cause that. Make sure you've gotten all the air out.

ok well heres the thing now. The temp gauge went up to 3/4 up and the engine isnt even that hot at all. Water isnt boiling, hoses are hot but you can touch them. Question is, is the stock temp gauge as crappy as people say they are?

is your top radiator hose hard if you squeeze it? how long has it been since you changed ur thermostat?

If it is not actually overheating then you probably have a bad sensor. Check BOTH of them on the therm housing.

ok let me clarify this again as i did when i started this post.....the engine, radiator and every part associated with the engine and cooling system is brand new. New radiator, hoses, coolant, coolant temp sensor, temp sending unit, etc. U name it, its new. Block was machined no cracks, head is new, gaskets are top of the line. coolant is at the top every time i open it. If i try to add, you cant....its full. resivoir is at full level. Anything else?

it's a dsm. lol. sorry, with what you just said, i'm out of ideas. i'm sure someone will say something you should try that i forgot about

With everything being new I would still say you have an air pocket in your cooling system that hasn't been bleed out yet. Thats just me.

Trying running an on/off Toggle switch. Its an old skool thing. Race cars would have something this for the fan.

Here's a How To

Tools needed crimp tool, wire-cutter, electrical tape, 5 feet Red wire and 5 feet Black wire, Toggle switch ON/OFF 1-2 bucks at local parts store(advance) Solder iron low watt for electrical

First use a crimp tool to the power wire Yellow or REd but DO NOT cut the wire so you could see the power wire, strip back an inch.

Next take same size wire Ideal wire should be RED, so you konw its the power, crimp one end tip wrapped it around or you could solder it to the power wire from the fan motor.

Take the red wire you just spliced to the power from the Fan to the Positive side of your battery ideal length 3 feet of wire from fan to battery.

Now you should have about 2 feet left from the RED WIRE.

Crimp one end of the wire Attach this to your Positive side of the Battery. Run the other end of the RED wire inside your DSM, either run it between the fender door jam or you want it cleaner put the red wire thru. your firewall ( choice is yours ) First method is quicker install and just to get you by till you correct your OverHeating Problems.

Second take your Black Wire you either bought or had lieing around.

Repeat exactly what you did in the First step, Do this to the ground wire color is either Black or brown, Run to the Negative side of your battery.

You should have about 2 feet of black wire left take this wire Again attach it to the negative post of your battery RUN this inside of your DSM in between the fender and door jam( CHOICE is yours )

Fun part finding a place for your new Toggle switch for your Fan. If it where me.

Since I DON't Smoke I would Remove my lighter and install it there. Race car look.

But good place is to RUN both wires up under your Dash Away from Heat. Pull out enough wire for the Toggle switch. This spot is below your dash above your gas pedal. With in arm reach and hidden.

Attach both wires to the Toggle either screw it your dash. or let hang there.


Hope I didn't confuse you guys so far.


When you start your car:

1. Put Key in the ignition START your DSM First

2. FLIP your TOGGLE switch to ON


When you TURN OFF your car

1. Turn Key off Pull it out

2. TURN OFF your TOGGLE switch.


Keep in mind and REMEMBER DO NOT LEAVE your Fan ON THIS will kill your Battery. This happend to me in my 89 Cutlass during Winter.

The only thing you'll Notice is a small smell from the wires from your Fan. isn't that bad really.


I am NOT RESPONSIBLE if you wiring it wrong and your DSM burns up.

This is just to get you by Till you FIX your OverHeating trouble.

not to hijack this thread but, this should help me w/ delaying the fan to be on for an additional 2 mins after the car is off.

You have skipped something that EVERYONE does.

Flush your heater core. I bet you get chunks of nasty coolant out of it.

o god, those hoses are a PITA to get to. if i were him, i'd route the hard line heater hose lines together (temporarily) with small heater hose. run the car, see what happens

the heater core is blocked off so its not a factor in this case, i believe that the car is not really overheating at all its the gauge he's also having problems with his speedo. A new gauge will be installed soon. This car has been a headache, but i think we got it. will keep everyone posted on findings

Thats a good tip mike, just how would I or someone else able to flush the Heatercore.
