during one of my cruises through the "you-pull" yard i came across a 2g that had been quite picked over, but i found the head lying underneath the car and figured id pick it up and see what i could do with it.

after getting it home and disassembled it was in pretty bad shape with the cam surfaces pretty scared up, and deck most likly warped.

now i figured that this might make a good head for my build since it can spend quite a bit of time at the machinist or head porter, and i dont have to worry about my car being down while i wait.

anybody ever had their head line bored and new cam surfaces pressd in?
anything that i should look into as far as upgraded materials for bearings (pbb, cu-be, etc?) or is AL all i can get?

i dont mind the investment as the head will be completly worked over anyway. (valves, seats, guides, 1/2 studs, etc)
plus how different can any other head actually be from this, unless i get a new one from Satan!

I saw them on a junker 4g63 head one time.

But you don't need bearings, you can just line bore the journals (you could do this if you had lost the caps and had replacements).

One day, I asked my buddy in his shop about this. He said he wanted to buy the tool and would buy it if I shelled out $150 for the job. I wasn't interested but I suspect that a shop that had the bar could do it for around that for less.

if they were able to make em smooth and not take off much surface then they might still be in spec, but i worry about some of the journals having rather large gouges and fear it would take quite a bit to get them smooth again.
thats whay i thought i could just bore them out and press in new surfaces that i could machine to a tighter spec.

If you can find someone to make custom bearings for the cam journals, you can line bore the head. Keep in mind you're going to have to remove enough material to not only true out the cam lines, but to make room for a journal bearing half in there to re-clearance the cams. If you have someone to make cam journal bearing inserts for a 420A head, go for it.

Otherwise, you're wasting your time and money.

Yup if they are that bad, it would be a problem. The line bore would be used if you wanted to use other cam caps or there was just a little scoring to work with. Yes the spec would be off slightly, but not noticeable.

Of course you could always fill the journal area with weld and then line bore. Kinda pricey for what you get.
