Since I am in the creative mode lately, I was wanting to make my own solid front motor mount. I have access to all kinds of steel and welding equip. at work and was wondering, what gauge steel would be the best to use for this. Also, for those that have done this themselves, would you by chance have any pics? oh yeah, any advice, if any, would surely be appreciated.

you want a completely solid mount? that's going to be harsh as hell! I'd be worried about breaking other things. IMO the best feel I've had for mounts was just filling the stock mounts with urethane.

I'm just wanting to make the one a solid mount, then either do the window-weld trick or get some inserts for the other 3.
Speaking of ride comfort and whatnot, just how harsh of a ride would there be with only the front one being a solid mount?

You'll notice an increase in vibration most likely. If you're really interested in fabricating a solid front motor mount, I'd drop XtremeRS (Matt) a PM and he could probably give you some insight as he used to make a few of these.

My buddy makes them for like $50. He machines out an interior. This is the closest thing I could find of a pic of it (source it out or desktop it to get a big view);

www.disturbingmotorsports.com sells solid delrin motor mount inserts for each mount.

I have delrin front and rear mounts and the vibrations are tolerable.

Just incase you don't know what delrin is...it's a metal replacement for when metal cannot be used. Zero flex. It's a solid piece of hardend plastic.

I have a delrin shift knob on the eightsix, it's awesome. it's weighted and never gets super hot or cold.

I'm thinking of buying a delrin shift bushing kit for the old Porsche, supposedly it doesn't wear out like the old plastic ones do

Thanks for all the info guys. I am going to be considering my options over the next few weeks - but Im pretty sure I want to attempt this one myself :) I will most likely try to pick up an extra one that way if i mess it up, I'm not in a jam.

Those delrin mounts look pretty good. I may end up grabbing some of those for the other 3. Thanks for the link.

Material wise you just really need some mild steel, I'd say 1/4" or 3/8" thick. Use the stocker as your template. Dimension the base with the hole centers, dim the gussets, and then make a bushing that the bolt will fit through.

Throw some hockey pucks in a lathe and press em in.

I filled mine with window weld and it's been working fine. The engine DOES NOT MOVE. I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out, alot better than i expected. The only one i didn't fill was the rear mount.

You get used to the extra vibration.

Make sure your window slides are tight, I thought my doors were going to come apart the first time I fired things up with the mounts filled.

I made both my front and rear solid mounts, I don't even notice the vibrations or the rattling change in the otherwise useless ashtray because my exhaust is 4" in diameter and only about 3 feet long... PM me your email and I'll shoot you some pics of some of some I've fab'd for cars in the past. A Starting recomendation would be to consider 10 Ga steel formed to a chanel for the base, notch it for a piece of 1" diameter cold-rolled thats been bored out to the diameter of the bolt and cut to the length of the I.D. of the mount. Drill your holes in the base and weld. Little paint on it and you have a very stout mount. Or if your Tig welding is up to par, you can always use something more exotic, 4130 chromolly, Stainless steel, ect...

thanks for pointing out the window thing, my d.s. window is already a little loose. hopefully i will have some time at work to get this done over the next 2 wks or so...i am even thinking of having the guys in the back powdercoat it black for me when its done.

thanks for the pm and email guys. i asked my supervisor today and he said i can mess around with the idea on my lunch breaks :) before i do that though, I'm going to try to get an extra unit from one of the local junk yards to help me, since my car is the only one I have and I can't really afford to take off the mount right now. That and my apt. complex doesn't allow you to put a vehicle in the air. jerks.
In the meantime, I will be sourcing the metal needed. Thanks for the help guys, If i have questions, I won't hesitate to send a pm/email.

Heres a pic of a finished front motor mount I used to make/sell on here. (sorry it took so long to post it) Painted black, but you get the idea. It's 1.5"x3"(can't remember what gauge) steel tubing, each end cut at an angle, then I used 1/2" ID 3/4" OD steel tube for the through bolt support, welded that to each outer side of the mount, then tack welded a nut on each inside end. Very simple, very strong. You can use an old mount as a template, or just pick up a new one at a parts store, trace it, then return it :) I made up a simple jig to make these in numbers, fairly quickly anyway. Used my floor standing drill press for the through bolt holes, and the mount holes.
