10903, SHIT! new exhaust sounds like lawn mower in a coffee can... Posted by tim97rs, Dec-27-01 04:08 PM
okay not quite that bad but i was trying to stay away from that raspy sound and its a bit more so now than before. but at least its all on now, and i have a TRUE 2.5in exhaust system. it took the exhaust guy 4+ hours to get it done and only charged my 100.00. he had to do some bastardization to get it to work though.
heres the deal now: pacesetter ceramic coated header (stinky!!) with factory end ball joint type fitting cut off and a new 2.5in one welded on, a new 2.5in down pipe(that's the one from the header to the cat, right? also the only part not mandrel bent), stock cat cut down for 2.5in flanges and pacesetter 2.5in mandrel bent cat-back with GST muffler instead of that POS from pacesetter. (any one want to buy??)
i can notice some difference in power with this set-up, i was pleasantly suprised. all said and done, the whole set-up cost about $450.00-header, modified cat, cat-back and labor. not to bad!!!

Sweet!!!! The guy hooked you up on labor cost, thats hella cool!!
So how big of a performance gain did you notice?

You should spend $15 on a cherry bomb muffler and use it as a resonator. I just bought one the other day and stuck it on to rid myself of the buzz that is starting to attract cops. I don't notice any performance loss going from no resonator to a high flow one either, the car is a LOT quieter but still has the low rumble like it should!! }>

Mine did that, too. Easiest way i found to clean up the sound? Add an exhaust turbine right after the manifold and before the downpipe :-)
Go with the cherrybomb. The problem is there's nothing to serve as a restrictor (like a turbo) or resonator (cherrybomb) in your setup.

Yeah, add some form of resonator. Cherry bomb will work, or a resonator from a performance exhaust company.
The other problem I see with your set up is muffler. You have full 2.5" cat back now, untill you get to the muffler. The inlet on the GS-T muffler is 2" so you reduce at the end to 2" You went through the trouble of modifying the header and then reduce at the muffler. I would suggest a nice performance muffler with 2.5" in/oulets

I did the exact thing with the glass pack I think mine is 14 inches long and it stopped the raspy sound and I didnt notice any performance drop.

thanks for the chery bomb infi, i'll try that! the pacesetter does have a little resonator built in, but not enough of one. Michael, i did have the guy make the intake to the muffler 2.5 as well, so its just the output that may be a tad restrictive now. is there a specific lenght of cherry bomd that works better than another?
thanks tim

Wouldn't having the 2" inlet on the muff help with back pressure since he is still NA. Wouldn't it help with low end torque, as he might have lost some with the 2.5" all the way from the header back. What do you pros think?
Tim, how is the performance with the new setup? Notice any gains or losses in the power band?

well, i would have to say that being such a relative subject without a dyno... i felt a little more power in the mid-range and some nice go in the high. its even possible that i got a bit more low-end since i seem to be able to spin the tires while on the go in 1st gear. i dont remember ever having done that before and the street was dry. of course it could just be impression that its easier, but still... over all i am happy and impressed.

Yeah I have to agree with Michael, get rid of the gst muffler and get a high flow universal muffler for around $100. Also have the shop remove the pacesetter resonator and put the cherry bomb in place. The longer the resonator, the more sound the sound is reduced.

yo yo yo, i been gone, but on my pacesetter setup,
i got the longest cherry bomb resonator, i think 29 inches. then we cut off the ends of it, and made it bout 26".
it is about 3 inches away from the 2nd o2 sensor, and close to the bend before goin over the crossmember.
get it, and you'll luv the sound your ride makes
not too sure bout the gst muff. as long as the inlet was ported out to 2.5 to match, it shud be coo

except aren't those just standard baffle type mufflers? or am I way off?

It's a small glasspack muffler. It's only about 3 - 4 inches around and about 25 - 29 inches long. Straight flow thru muffler .

to clarify.. I was talking about teh GST muffler... not the cherrybomb glass packs... yeah I knwo those are just straight through resonators.. and coo ones at that for the price.
but what kinda mufflers are the GST ones? are they even any better then the RS/GS one? or do they just have two tips and that's it? hehe.

10917, RE: SHIT! new exhaust sounds like lawn mower in a coffee can... Posted by tim97rs, Dec-30-01 03:15 AM
as far as i understand, they are better than RS/GS. not just two tips on the same muffler, its a bit bigger i beleive and has two tips for better/less restrictive flow. it comes off the 210hp turbo, so its gotta be better than the 140hp RS/GS. couse thats just my slightly educated $.02...there are others who know more technical info...but thats the jist of it

I have the pace setter and I have no problem with raspy sounds aor anything like that. But I do have a $200 hayame muffler on the end of the piping though. I guess that helps? My setup is the shiznit!!!!
