Can someone please tell me if the part where you screw on your oil filter can be replaced without dropping the oil pan that would be great

I have a bad oil leak and it seems to be coming from that section where the filter and metal meet

I have a shop manual and it is not clear weather you can change that out without dropping pan or not, when feeling around under there i can not be sure

it is a 420A motor so all are aware

if anyone even looks at this please let me know if you have one oil filter housing with gasket for sale, or maybe even point me to where i could purchase one rather quickly, of course with gaskets and all if needed

comming from where the filter and the metal meet? Did you just have the oil/filter changed and maybe there's two gaskets on there? it'll puke like a MF if that's the case...

nope, just a standard oil filter, but when the filter is off i can see how the gasket on the filter just does not sit even, seems the part where the gasket and filter meet is warped if that is possible

Perhaps, but I've never heard or seen that yet in my experience...someone else may have however. Just to check, are you making sure you clean the the surface where the oil filter gasket is going to meet? You want that as clean as possible. Also apply a light film of fresh oil to the gasket lining on the filter and do not over tighten the filter.

All that stuff is pretty common sense for the most part, but just wanted to make sure.

yes sir, i do all of the above when changing my oil, do you know if that part can be changed or not?

where else would a leak come from in that area?

2 things

when you drop the filter remove the threaded adapter in there too (deep well socket needed) and then the filter housing will drop off. check all this stuff for anything bent and make sure the O-ring is on the filter housing.
clean and reinstall then torque to spec DO NOT GUESS THIS!! rent borrow steal a torque wrench. hell, you own a 2gnt you should OWN one of these :thumbsup

by chancce has the block been rebuilt recently?
because there is one O-ring that notoriously gets left out when rebuilding the block. and unfortunatly this is an "engine-pull required" fix if it has been left out

Dumb question, but is the oil filter the correct one for the engine? Maybe match up the number on the filter to double check...esp before tearing things apart.

i will double check the o ring tonight and see if it is just that, do you have a part number for the o-ring needed so i can order that and just replace while i am there

i own 2 torque wrenches and live to follow torque specs, so no worries there

the engine is a rebuilt and i checked for that o-ring and it was done, so thank god but no worries there for me, i would hate to pull motor again, that would suck

o-ring is ordered but thanks in case anyone looked, going to drop the filter housing tonight, need to see what it is i am dealing with here

well i have almost a whole motor collecting dust so I mean if you need that housing I am sure that I can get my off when i get time.

what o ring are you talking about? I am just wondering because I am going to be picking up my engine from the machine shop this week and then reassemble it. I just want to be sure I put it in. I have a shop manual im guessing it should show in detail where every gasket should go.

well took oil filter housing down and everything looked good, i have a new o-ring gasket on order but for the time being i cleaned everything and torqued all back to spec so i can only hope it was that easy, when i get new part i will take back down again and use new gasket

wanted to says thanks to everyone and i will let you all know if it was just that easy, but this is a dsm and nothing is that simple

If you've got an oil leak from the o-ring under the oil filter housing failing, you will be the first I've ever heard of such a thing. Be thankful that it *is* that simple. Were it the o-ring mentioned elsewhere, it's a royal pain in the ass.

Seriously. Pulling the entire engine, flipping it upside down and breaking the bedplate free so you can replace a fifty cent o-ring. I hate fifty cent.

well i took down the housing cleaned it off and replaced everything, and the leak seems to be gone, drove the car for 3 hours parked it and no oil under the car when i woke up next morning, i am keeping my eye on it though

okay was not the oil filter housing gasket, after running for a while i found that i am still losing oil, when i checked this am she was a quart low, so the leak got way better but apparently the housing gasket wasnt the only spot, now it looks like the oil is sitting on the right side of the oil pan (when laying under car), but when i place my hand above oil pan it is dry for the most part, anyone have any thoughts were i should look next, what is right above oil pan that could be leaking

does anyone have an extra oil filter housing? i will gladly pay you, shipping to 08865

today i change the oil pan gasket and hope it is that, yesterday was the CPS o-ring

actually you might be in luck I have 2 420A motors and am only using 1 so ill have to look and see if I can find the extra housing. PM me or Email me at tuxdreamerx@aim.com ill look after I post this.

Edit: I found the housing and the center bolt it was off of my 95 talon that I crushed and I have the housing off of my eclipse for me so this is extra. make me an offer and we will go from there.

well dropped the oil pan over the weekend and replaced the gasket, so far no oil on garage floor
