108773, Just paid off my car any tips for a Kalifornia owner??? Posted by fullmoon, May-26-08 04:58 AM
Ok Fellas the big day has come and gone she's now paid off (Yep all 27 hundred) and I need to know how far I can push my mods, In other words, What's the most I can do and not trip up the smog machine?
I did a header mod and I gotta wrap it up ASAP as the Cat is not getting hot enough to pass the check, What else can I do to get her a little more respect on the street? Driving an 18 wheel rig with no rent to pay trust me Money's no object!!! :)
I wanna stay N/A because I wanna keep her till she turns into a classic besides I overpaid for her. :)
Gonna have full carbon fiber on the inside, I thought about Carbon Fiber on the outside but I think it fades so I may go all Fiberglass body parts rims will be ultra light weight so much for that.
My issue is the dirty 420a what can I do to that and still pass Kalifornia test tailpipe test?
I would go turbo because I know of a hell of a loop hole in the law just don't know if it would work in the courts and I can't find an honest laywer who would tell me.
My goal is 15.5 flat in the 1/4 mile :)
And people when ya post please be serious no jokes BS and aurguments Thanx! ;)

Header does not determine how hot the cat gets.....you might want to start troubleshooting instead of modding!

Yea I got that on my honey dew list too.
See the man who did my smog told me that every car that has had a header mod or a cat mod does not burn all the fule and that is the reason mines did not pass at the other station.
I had new plugs wires and oil changed all installed after I did my mods and it did not pass so I ran into a witch doctor who got it to pass next time I get by the house I get Pep Boys to hook it to the box and see what it really may be that's causing it to bump the fule output up just a tat bit only like 7 points over what Kalif says I'm allowed.
But my biggest problem is can this car be tuned to run really quick and be clean at the same time?
I got a few tricks up my sleave if need be but I like clean air more than anybody even a tree hugger! :)
I only got 71-72 on the Od and I refuse to give up on ny baby.
There has to be some mods I can do to improve the somewhat sluggish performance.
I can tell it's motor that has potential so far I can spank a few Hondas and V6 Mustangs :)

fyi , its cali, and the state blows gay dick...you cant do anything...
ive been able to pass, but not legally...and it costs $$$..legally, you can do a header (has to be Greddy, so prepare for a 400$ tag) and a cold air intake (AC auto tech is the cheapest CARB legal one). and a 2.5" cat back, but you'll most likely get hassled..
im moving b/c lately its been getting soo bad here with this smog crap and all the hippies...
i did get my stg 4+ turbo setup to pass smog..hehhe, but it was extremely expensive...and looking back, it wasnt worth it.. oh well...
what part of cali u in?

I'm down in L.A. and I use K because it reminds me the days of Germany's Hitler :)
Kamrade etc etc :)
No offence ment if you or any of you guys are Jewish either
But Yea I'd like to get my family out too ASAP before the Kastapo prevents them from leaving.
I got a header Pace Setter I hacked my box no hassle from the Kastapo about my muffler. I had real plans but the Mitsu dealer did not tell me the truth about turbos and Kalifornia.
So I guess after throwing all the stuff on her I legaly can I gotta save up for another car that I will buy out of state because if Kalifornia Kastapo can be mean to me I can be mean too and not spend no money in the state! ;)
27 grand down the hole.... Sad but true... :(

I'm in LA county too. And b/c I'm not paranoid about posting...
You have to go stealth. That means no anodized shit underneath the hood, no chrome, no anything that looks like its aftermarket. This will save you headache if you are ever profiled by the cops and are asked to open the hood. Make car appear as stock as possible from the outside.
As you do any electronic mods, make the wiring as discrete as possible. Once the AEM FIC works on our cars we will be able to go turbo with no CEL, and electronics will look stock if you are smart about it.
Fab up a heat shield over the turbo and exhaust mani, encase the IC piping in the stock air box/tube. SMIC. Cover your guages when you get the smog check. No cams. Have stock o2 sensor appear stock by all reasonable vantage points.
Our state will punish you if you have a car that gets better efficiency/less emissions than a stock car, just b/c things are modified. Oh but it's okay to drive a fucking hummer or 2-ton german piece of luxury shit that gets mileage in the teens.

I like your style! :) Hay I was told on the tailpipe end a turbo causes a failure at least that's what the guy at Greddy told me, In fact he said they were working on one but the 420a is a dirty motor and did not pass the CARB testing they gave up.
I found a turbo I can mount in a hidden location and a SC that I can sheild very well so I think I'll catch some guys who has done what you have done and see if they'll let me take a peek when I get back in town for some down time.
"Once the AEM FIC works on our cars we will be able to go turbo with no CEL"...What do ya mean by this statement?

a turbo and SC.. um,...OK...you do know u cant go both....right?
AEM FIC is a fuel / engine managment package, rolled into a nice ball. so its hidden, no frankenstie wires and fuel hoses every where..very lo-pro..
i dont htink greddy ever tired nething for the 420a, i think (imo) that was aload of BS...im runni 15-18 psi, and i smogged clener then stock...they prolly dindt see a market in it b/c most wont pay the price tag...
if ur serious, search, and get a normal turbo, and shield it..
go big or go home..

Sorry bout that I was dog *ick tired when I wrote that :) No what I ment was that I found one I could hide really well but the price tagg is high as hell!!!
http://www.ststurbo.com/
I found a cheepo too...
http://yhst-64458468724132.stores.yahoo.net/420a-motor-talon-neon-eclipse-t3-turbo-kit-w-pi.html
I found SC at this site the price tagg is also high but it was somthing different that no one that I know of has done yet...
http://www.procharger.com/
I thought about taking the cheap one and having it installed like the STS but I think that would be really hard to do for the shop I choose to do the work for me.
Trust me I won't turn one screw I'll hire some pros to do it because I don't wanna see any blown up motors fried ECU's and or breakdowns because I don't know jack from jill about installations :(
I do have one question while on the subject of break downs, Do you guys that have had turbo installs have any trouble with your 420a's after installing the systems?
I would be ok with a 100% N/A rat motor but I would hafta have registered as a N.V. auto just doing buisness out of Nevada in Kalifornia and have it and have it registered under a N.V. corporate buisness account legal address etc just to cover my back ;)
So what do you guys think???

You are the shadiest, most paranoid person I have seen in a long time.
Did you seriously just talk about creating a legit business one state over to get away from emissions?
Maybe I dont understand just how bad CA is... I live in SC, they dont care what we do :)

You don't, CA is the WORST state there is in regards to modifying cars. It doesn't matter if you live in the middle of nowhere, you still have to pass the strictest emissions regulations. The people are overtrained to see every last little thing that could be considered "non-stock" and the rule is guilty until proven innocent. I would rather hand my nuts to a rabid badger (ok maybe not) before taking a highly modded car through a CARB building.
Thank God I live in colorado, our emissions are strict but the loopholes are wonderfully big.

Why Thank You...:) And to your question the crackdowns are sporatic but the stakes are kinda high, last guy I talk to had one installed and it cost em $600 bucks and the judge said he had to remove it.
I'm going to hafta do a bit more digging on one other law U.C.C. 1-207 to see if that will make em leave me alone, I used it for a speeding ticket and it worked so far no points for 85 in a 65. ;)
And yes a legit biz see a corporation has the same rights as a person and in some cases then some and if that's what it takes I'm going for it too!
What kills me is us guys who don't want to spend cash for a Vet yet can get about the same HP with an eclipse etc.. are frowned upon yet a Vet or an old classic owner they leave them alone and they can do almost anything they want that goes double for the off road 4x4's!!!
I think I'll go with the STS I can hide the snail pretty good with a sheild and a bit of cutting underneath but dang that SC looks sweet!

agreed, CA is THE WORST!! they go to any lentgh, they even have fake user names on a lot of boards to find meets and what not.. its gay..
full: as for probs after turboing the car.. youll be hard pressed to find anyone that did not have an issue..thtas how these things work, theres always an isse, weather its doen at a shop or you do it.. but remeber if you go cheap.. you blow up, usually..lol.
imo..a good kit is like a stg 2 hahn, im sure theres some F/S here somewhere..
CA is gay,, and BTW..
you cant get it reg in NV.. tried, even if u have a company, if its reg to you, which it will be, u will need to be a resident in that state.. there was a loop hole like that a few yrs back, but they have closed it b/c thas what a lot of ppl did...u could have it NV, but only for 30-90 days.. then u get hosed....

Oh I see so do you guys have problems every blue moon or all the time or is it right after install?
If it's every blue moon I'm gonna just go all bolt-on and call it a day, I need a car that's gonna start when I turn the key because I don't know anything about TPS sensors, ECU's, fule ratio mixtures and or rebuilding the 420a etc etc... I'll just save up and buy another car. :(
At least it looks good. :) Thanx guys for all your help

it all depends on what u buy (quality) and if you buy the proper monitoring equip, condition of the engine, and the user/installer...
