108706, Long rod motor ?'s

Im getting a long rod kit from howel automotive. I've searched quite a bit but i cant seem to find what im looking for. What all do i need to do in regards of getting it running as in rev limiter ect. I'm rebuilding the head with crane cams and new valvetrain(1 piece valves, stiffer springs, titanium ratainers and new keepers.) and the motor will be running via megasquirt. I know corbin has a long rod but i havent got a hold of him yet. Thanks for the info!

are you trying to go to 9k or 10k?
if not there is nothing you need to change as far as motor setup.
if you are then you have MS then you can control the revlimiter, which the top end will ultimatly be determined on a dyno and is based on your entire system together not arbitrarily setting it at 10k and hoping it makes power up there.

I bought the long rods from howell, as well as the custom made pistons, the reason being is that after some research I found out that you would hold some low end torque and that it would help you with reving higher.

You are building the head to stand the high revs, so that is good... like someone said before me, to extend your rev limit MSnS will help, I was told by somebody that the stock rev limit is 7800 (spark goes out), but we hit fuel cut at 7200, so with MS you should be able to move the fuel cut line and the spark, personally if you ask, I am only moving it 200rpm, so it is 8000rpms, but as Terry said, the factory redline in most cases is enough, but all engiens are different and depending on your setup you might want to rev higher, IMO.

but from there on everything should be the same, if you order the pistons (longrod pistons) from howell, make sure you get the spacers, I know Corbin used to have oil issues because he didnt know he had to install them, this is due to the piston pin being moved up a bit.

good luck dude, keep us updated, you have a similar build to mine, this should be fun, lol

I can't add anything that hasn't been said, but I might as well put in my 2 cents. I don't think the long rod kit gives you significantly greater capabilities than the standard length rod kit. I think it is mostly marketing, but it is still a good product. Pick the redline based on your power curve. I've got my hard cut set at 8,000 because I have no dyno graph to tell me to go higher. Make sure you get and install the support rings under the oil ring set. Otherwise, you will burn oil by the quart.
