108425, 4g63t swap....I know. Dont bitch, just read.

You all know i spun a rod bearing. My friend Josh jumped at the opportunity to help me. He doesn't know much about dsms but he and his dad build race cars. Alot of his friends and family run alot of trick setups. I had no idea. I thought he was a gaming nerd because all he used to do was come over and play video games with my brother. I didn't have a car then.

To the point, he starts helping me out, without my asking. He wanted to know why i needed a shortblock from a neon/avenger/sebring when we could just say to hell with it and do a 4g63t swap. I told him it's going to cost atleast 3 grand and i just want to get the car boosted and sold so i can get anothe honda.

He asked exactly what i would need for the swap and then looked everything up and quoted me $250 in parts. That's gauge cluster, axles, eprom ecu, hubs, crossmember, wire harness, tranny, engine..... He said "fuck, why dont we just go find a fwd turbo and take the sawzall to it and bring a front clip to the shop?"

"We can do that"

"Sure"

"The bays are completely different though. Everything is flipped and we'll need custom places for the mounts made in the bay."

"I have a gas mig welder, a tig welder, an iron worker, a lathe......everything you'll need."

"well, it seams good. we can use 2g pistons and 1g rods. I know where a set is at now and with a six bolt block.......he wont want much for it"

Now, i've got a kid comming in about 8-9 months. I just want to get rid of the car. He's trying to talk me into this and tell me it's not nearly as hard as i or anyone is making it out to be. He said i can spend the same amount of money trying to get my motor back up and reliable enough to handle 8psi (his dad said 11 on my t25 because it doesn't flow shit as far as cfm goes). I'm just wanting a car that's going to be easy. I can build a d-series honda block to handle 600-700 hp for under $400. Vitara pistons, tuner toyz rods, eagle block gaurd and custom block pins......done, especially if i buy used. I can get the head ported, decked, polished and done for under $300. Big cam for $100 used. Adj cam gear for $50...... The turbo components area always going cheap used. Ic piping bent for the app for $100. Intercoolers for $50-100, holset and garrett turbos for 150, dirt cheap turbo manifolds...... See where i'm going with this? I could sell my car boosted and painted for about $3k, buy a honda hatch and build it all in one shot that will run faster and more reliable than my 2gnt ever could for pennies.

What should i do?

Listen to somebody who has deep roots in racing and has several cars under his belt or listen to building a budget honda hatch turbo with half the weight and that has replacement parts everywhere you look for next to nothing......

no one is going to want to buy a car that has been hacked up. If i pop the hood on a car and see welding done in the bay... im out. I would just take the hit and sell the car as is or buy a junkyard motor, drop it in and sell it. If you have your heart set on a honda go buy a cheap hatch. 2gnt's arent for everyone! I built my girlfriend a b16 (itr intake manifold, password jdm intake, 4-1 header w/ 2.5 collector, greddy exhaust, itr cams, springs and retainers and a test pipe for a cat) ek and i cant stand it.... the lack of torque is not cool.

Some people dont care. 99.9% of all my turbo parts are brand name. It's not going to be a hack job install. Not the 420a anyway.

I wouldn't sell it if i did a 4g63t swap though.

Yeah, i might just sell it as is mechanical-wise and then just get it painted and tinted...... SHould be able to get atleast 2k for it. 1k more boosted though. People like turbo spool, open wastegates, front mount ic's and whistling bov's. It screams "bad ass"

Lack of torque in an all motor b16a...go figure. Still running stock pistons and rods i'm guessing. Tuner toy rods and vitara pistons are your friends. Bottle safe, boost safe, and best of all, dirt cheap.

Well you seem to know and like Honda's. Im very knowledgeable about them as well but im not that impressed with them unless you dump lots of money into them.... and after that you still have a "me too" car. You could put that money into a 2gnt and be a little different but Its your decision! Good luck with whatever you do!

sounds like a bunch of crazy talk, but if you can pull it off for less than the cost of buying a GST, I say go for it.

Honda's can be fun but B16's are torqueless wonders. I'd at least go with a B18 personally, my Integras were always much more torquey than any of the Civics that I had the chance to drive

If you think you and your friend can do it and not have it be a complete clusterfuck, I think you should go for it. It'll cost you a lot more in time and money than you realize, despite what your friend thinks, and it'll still be a hack job when you're done.

He doesn't have me quite convinced that it's a worthwhile swap. Granted, i'd love the gobs of torque and how fucking mean a tuned 4g63t sounds but it's the reliability, cost, and sourcing replacement parts that has me buggin. You're right dino, downtime..... Lots and lots of downtime and even after the engine is in and ready to roll, it might not start having me chasing wires and troubleshooting for what could be weeks.

I've never done any crazy import swaps. Just hondas. Some engines are a direct drop-in, others require a swap kit and the swap kit is available. There is no swap kit for a 4g63 into an n/t but my friend insists it'll be a cake walk. Fuck it. Too many question marks. It's keeping the 420a.

To the honda heads, b16a head on a b18 block ftw. For the cheap, Dohc zc head on a d16 block.

I dont think hondas are "me too" cars. Some people follow what others have done, i always try to do a bit more. You can say they're costly to build but if you know where to get your parts.... Follow me? I could handle paying $50 for a tranny and $100 for a head and $75 for a block...... D series parts are cheeeeeeeeep. Tuners and tuning software is a dime a dozen and honda ecus can be reflashed, chipped, etc for simple boosted setups. I know my hondas and know what the most cost-effective ways to make them fast. DC1 tegs and ef/eg hatches are the way to go to have a fast, reliable car for next to nothing. Lots of tuners, oversaturated market....nuff said.

Ofcourse i'll post my 2gnt on here when i'm ready to sell. Not just craigslist, modified, autotrader, ebay and homemadeturbo. We'll see how things go in the months to come. I'm on the edge of my seat, that's for damn sure.

Why put in a 4g63 anyway. I mean if your talking about fabricating an engine bay to get a 4g63 engine in, There are way better engines out there than that, which would be much more worth it. And you would have to do the same amount of work.

If i had the time, i'd swap in an ls1/ls6, put a mustang rear end in and call it a done.

4g63 is just the mounts pretty much. I have no problems gutting shit out. If i wanted to, i could gut my entire car and have it sitting as a bare shell in the yard in under 10 hours. I can weld. I have quite a bit of fab experience.

Swapping a 4g63 in a 420a makes sense on alot of fronts, where they are the same basic car. Just a different wire harness, ecu, engine axles and gauge cluster. The shift linkage is different (i think but i'm not sure, tired right now). Those aren't any big hurdles.

Chasing wires would be the worst part for me. I fucking hate electrical work. It's not that hard, it's just labeling, cutting, crimping.......i dont like it. The crimp tool doesn't like me.

Still, the car is sitting so i have the option.

If i can get this done for under $500, which i probably can, it'll get done. Nobody ever takes into consideration how expensive and hard to find 2gnt underhood items are. Blow a motor or a trans and you'll see that. 4g63t motors, parts and fwd trannies are DIRT CHEAP and alot of avid dsmers have several spares. Atleast the ones i know do which makes getting parts for the swap easier.

I really dont know yet. If i do knuckle down and neglect everything i've heard about others doing the swap, 2gnt will be the first to find out just how cleanly and cheaply it can be done. Might take a week or so to do (and that's living at the shop monday through thursday) but on paper, it looks pretty straightfoward.

so did communism ;)

But if you do go for it, best of luck. I personally think it's silly b/c you would still be fwd, I'd rather just build the motor for lots of boost

Communism looked GREAT on paper.

Capitalism is sooo much sweeter, especially if you're on the upside of it..... I rarely am but ok.

You're right though, i still will be ff. In a week or so HOPEFULLY, i'll be hunting for a shortblock on the cheap. I've been fixing the buick's shoddy 3800 series II (yes with the shit, defective egr and plastic intake mani) to sell our chrysler concorde to raise cash. That car should be up tomorrow if my mom didn't drop a bolt for the egr heatshield into the injector port like i think she did.

Everyone i know in my tuning scene is telling me this and that and telling me "i know a guy/i know where you can find/i'll help/yadayada" but it looks like i'm on my own. I hand out turbos, intakes, tools, wheels, etc for free but nobody can help me get a motor with my own money? Lol. Jerkoffs.... There's enough freakin' neons around here. If I can't find one, i deserve to be shot. Pulling it is the only downside because NOBODY HAS A LIFT. My best friend does but he can't be bothered to part with it for a couple of days. Shit sucks. Obviously, i need to stop being so nice to my so-called friends. They come around when they need something FOR FREE but i'm shit out of luck when i need something that i'll PAY FOR.

hhehe i know how you feel about the friends thing.

i wouldn't bother doing a 4g63 swap. I would do a srt 2.4L its much easier and you get a a extra .4L of displacement so you can run a bigger turbo ;) and not to mention its MUCH cheaper heeh good luck
108504, RE: 4g63t swap....I know. Dont bitch, just read.
Posted by 2GeclipseRS, Apr-26-08 09:15 PM
I wanted to do an srt4/old version 2.4L block swap. I still kinda do. It's still up in the air. I'm trying to see if i can finish my turbo system and have a running car with $600. Obviously, i gave up on the 4g63t. Too much bullshit and i'd rather not throw a wrench through the windshield.... I had enough fun working on a 3800 series II's entire coolant system during the week. Gotta put a water pump on this week and if it's still pissing coolant i'm probably going to beat it with a hammer until my arm gets tired. :)

I drove down an alley one day bumped into a guy who had a shop in facing the alley and he said could do a swap for me for 5 grand.

Now I cannot see it being much less than that and or if it can be done right and it don't sound like you know him very well, from what you posted all he seem to be was a game freak geek?

I hope he knows what he's talk'n about or don't get 1/2 way into the job and raise the price on ya.

As a matter of fact if he can do a swap that cheap then he could do the 420a for next to nothing so I'd stick with the 420a.

IMO wayyy too many things can go wrong after it's installed but I do wish you well if you do decide to go for a swap.

the swap is doable
a shop in montreal has done 2 of them that I know off

that car is one of them
http://gs2gst.monchar.com/

driving it is like having sex with a post-op transexual

it looks like a woman from a distance but up close it's not the real thing and the real feeling :)

It really wouldnt even be noticeable that is was hacked at all .If it were a front clip like your saying then no motor mounts would be welded on they would be 4g63oem mounts on a 4g63 front clip .After measuring ,straightening ,welding ,filler and paint you would never know . Iv done a few clips and you cannot even tell it was 2 halves put together . Lots of work and expensive equipment and use a spot welder
108554, RE: 4g63t swap....I know. Dont bitch, just read.

Like i said, if we had the whole front clip, that's everything for the swap.

No way in hell i'd weld two cars together though. Reminds me of that hyundai on pimp my ride that was welded with birdshit and bubblegum.....

I'd cut the mounts out and weld them into the 2gnt bay. My welds in no way, shape or form look like birdshit. Also, i rule with a dremel and an angle grinder if i need to smooth anything out.

Again, i hate wiring. I hated doing it for my stereo. I hated doing it to run a switch for my reverse lights. It was easy but it didn't mean it was fun cutting my hands all to hell underneath the center of the dash. The wires would be the hardest part, most likely the most time-consuming.
