108279, Rear Main Seal backwards? Posted by KnightHawk434th, Apr-02-08 03:27 PM
Well I suppose this has been discussed a number of times, but does anyone happen to have a better description of rear main install than the FSM? Pehaps maybe a picture? I've been losing about 1qt of oil every 2 weeks or so, and just recently, my oil pressure has began to slowly drop and my clutch has began to slip. I took off the rubber boot at the clutch fork to find grease, dirt and...OIL coming out of there. I put 2 and 2 together to tell that is why my clutch is slipping before I get around to pulling my tranny (whenever I manage to get home next...I'm stuck on campus).
When I rebuilt the engine, I followed the FSM and it talked about a line saying "THIS SIDE OUT" on the seal. Well the problem is, the Felpro one I got doesn't have that line ANYWHERE on there, so I had to rely on the experiences of my dad and a buddy of mine (both who have never worked on the 420a, but rather v8 engines). Now I realize that the principles are similar, but they both had me install the seal so that the flat side of the seal (like this one here) is out:

It isn't a 420a seal but it gives a pic of how i installed it, flat side out. I think that I have installed it backwards. This possible? I'm almost positive that I did, just wanted to get a second opinion.
