Hey guys, i have been running the stock cams up until now. Today i heard my friends gsx with 280 cams and i fell in love with the sound. it sounds like a v8 at idle.

I have been doing a lot of searching and there isnt much solid information on the subject. Some people swear by the stock cams and some people say that crower stage 2 are the best. So my question is what are the best cams on a fully built engine with msns. Thanks

Aparently, our heads flow better than the 1st gen and 2nd gen 4g63's.

People have made good power with the head left stock but it cant hurt to beef it up and drop in a set of turbo grind cams....


When i think of a purpose built head, i think of maximum flow. I want that intake valve to be open long enough to squeeze as much air as i can into the cylinder and i want the exhaust valve to open to let it out as quick as possible. The bigger the cams, the larger the ports and the bigger the valves, the more top end power you will make but your idle and low end will suffer. Who cares though? If you want to run a big turbo, that's the way to go. Built it to make top end power.


I know you love the sound of a 4g63t with big cams. Who doesn't?

As far as duration, lift, ramp and all that jazz, you'll have to wait for foggy, bullett or somebody else who knows what they are talking about. I've read this stuff but it hasn't burned in. I work off basic physics and what already works for other people. Most of the camshaft faqs i read never stuck. Most of it went in one ear and out the other aside from the simple stuff.

Anyway, in reference to what was said about bigger cam, ports, valves, etc, affecting idle, that's not entirely true. What affects idle is cam overlap. Overlap is caused when the intake valve opens as the exhaust valve is still closing. The more overlap you have, the less idle vacuum you have.

For turbo, you want to find a cam with a decent amount of duration, lots of lift (to open the valve WIDE for the duration), and less than normal overlap (when compared to NA big cams). If you have too much overlap in a boosted environment, you're losing some of that compressed air out the exhaust.

I think the Crower 2 or Crower 2 turbo cams will be a good mod for your setup.
