108165, Replace Belts? Posted by jarretpcurry, Mar-20-08 03:46 PM
I know this is a stupid question but I've gotta' ask it. How in the hell do I go about replacing the Alternator and Power Steering/AC Belts? The car's squeaking horribly. When I start to Brake, when the Lights are on, when the Heat's on, Raising/Lowering the Windows. It's horrible. I'm not Mentally Challenged or anything, so I'm pretty sure I'd be able to do it myself. I don't feel like paying over a Hundred Bucks to have some Shop do it. I'd like to atleast give it a try. Can ANYONE help me out with like a Step-By-Step or some Pictures or something? Thanks a lot Guys.

It's pretty damn simple once you know what you have to do. No pics but here's a few steps from the timing belt install found here:
http://www.geocities.com/eclipsed4evr98/Timingbeltprocedure.html
Step 1: Raise the front of car and remove the passenger wheel. Step 2 Now you will see a black cover hiding the crank pulley. You need to remove this. There are 3 bolts, and 2 plastic philips head screw clips holding it on. Step 3: You now can see the crank pulley, and a better view of alternator and belts. Loosen the alternator by the 1 bolt on the bottom, and access the top bolt by the top of the car. There is an adjustment bolt on the firewall side of the alternator, and is accessed from underneath the car. Loosen this bolt to give slack in belt. You cannot remove belt at this time because the other accessory belt is still on. Step 7: Remove the power steering pump. 2 bolts are accessed through the pulley holes, and there is 1 bolt on the rear of the pump.
Those should be enough to get you started. By following those steps you'll be able to pull the belts off and replace them

Why not figure out which belt is loose and just tighten it? First push on your PS belt to see if it is obviously loose. If not, lay next to your passenger tire, reach around the splash shield behind the crank pulley and feel for slack in the alternator belt. If it feels tight as well, it could be the tensioner that tightens the PS belt located underneath the power steering pump and above the AC compressor. Try spraying some WD-40 on the tensioner pulley while the car is running to see if the shrieking stops. If so, either tighten it down or replace it.

My Alternator Belt is the one that is loose. Very loose. It pushes in way more than just a Half Inch. How do I go about tightening the belt? They are Newer Belts that got put on when I swapped my old 420 for the Newer one.

If you are tightening it, I found the easiest way is to jack up the passenger side, get under the car with a 13mm ratcheting wrench, slide your hand and arm in to where you can comfortably use the ratcheting wrench to tighten the alternator. The bolt isn't seen from under the car, but it is on the firewall side of the alt. Since the belt is loose, I would imagine that the upper and lower 15mm bolts will allow you to tighten it without having to loosen those bolts first. Once you get the belt as tight as you want it, tighten the 15mm under the backside of the alternator, then tighten the upper 15mm from the top between the timing cover and the back of the shock tower. The top bolt is kind of hard to get to.

I found the bolt on the Fire-Wall side. Friggen thing's not only Hidden, but it's slightly on an angle too. It was a pain in the ass to get to with a Socket Wrench. I got to it though, I didn't have to touch either of the other bolts. The Screaming went away as soon as I tightened it up, but now I seem to have like a slight whirling sound when Revving or Accelerating. Maybe need to tighten it up just a small bit more? Is anyones 420 actually THAT quiet though? Really? Haha.
