Okay so I bought a 97 talon NA cheap because the motor was knocking. I figured I could drop the oil pan install new rod bearings and drive it for a while. Well I found deeply groved bearins so I tore the whole motor down. After tearing it down I found metal shavings in the head so I had to buy a head (groved head and cams). Now my newest descovery I need a crankshaft. I took the block and crank to a near by machine shop only to be told that the crank currently measures at 19 under and this is before turning or polishing so there is no room for work left on this crank as 20 over is the biggest bearings I can buy. Is this common for the crank to wear this much? After searching around I found that Advance Auto has I remainufactured crankshaft kit with both rod and main bearings for $228.88. I was going to try and find a used crank but by the time I would take it to the machine shop, buy main bearings and buy rod bearings the price would be higher and alot more time envolved. Does this sound right? Has anyone else used or heard of anyone else using a reman crank? Just looking for answers to get my car on the road but reliable. Thanks

it's a stock crank.

Your crank is worn so much because it spun bearings. That's to be expected.

I bought a crank kit for my build. It was definately more cost effective rather than having my crank ground and buying undersized bearings.

A remanufactured crank, is a worn crank just like yours that has had the journals built up by welding metal to them. They are then machined down to spec for standard bearings.

I understand that the Advance Auto crank is just a stock crank I was just worried since it was remanufactured. I was also worried that when they weld in metal to make it standard size again will this new added metal wear faster than a stock crank? I think I am going to go ahead and purchase the reman crank. as long as you have the proper size bearings, a functioning lubricationg system, and everything is assembled properly, a reman'd crank shouldn't experience any unususal wear. if anything the welding makes things harder
