If it isn't one thing it's another.

Ok so last night after parking the car, I forgot to put the hood vents back in and the motor got cold fast from rain.

Well today I go out to start the car and my car sounds loud as hell found that EVERY bottom bolt on the exhaust manifold has snapped off.


What is the easiest way to extract these three half snapped bolts...this is another thing I need fixed for inspection now...WTF...Exhaust leak.

Please help.

Get a hardened drill bit. Drill a hole deep enough into the broken bolts and then hammer an extractor into the holes and remove. Going to be a bitch, but thats how I'd do it.

any other ideas?? That sounds like what I'm going to do...that was what I was thinking...just wondering if there was any 2gnt tricks...

Did just the bolt heads snap off leaving some threads still sticking out or did they shear at the head?

if there's some still sicking out you might be able to get them with just pliers.

yeah it was just the head...so now I have a MAJOR exhaust leak...it sucks..you might be right...should I take them out kinda warm??

or do it with the motor cold??

Well you have a few options you could let the car warm up that might help but you would probably be better off if you applied heat directly to the head with a torch. Caution is needed here are you can easily overheat the aluminum head and deform it with too much heat. Then if there is some bolt left to get a set of vise grips on you might be able to turn it out. Another trick that I have used is to take a nut and tig weld it on to the leftover piece. This can be tricky but it really works well if done right. And you last option could be a easy-out, this is where you drill the stud then use an easy-out to turn it out. Good luck.

Well to let you all know this project is DONE!!!

And guess what, it was done without an issue imagine that.

I used a pair of vise grips and squeezed them shut with a pair of pliers. I gripped them bolts so tight and sprayed with PB blaster. Took my time and there all out.

I can't believe that the dam manifold gasket was 30$ insane. So it cost me a total of 45$ for the four bolt and gasket overnighted.

Satan rapped me!! But it's finally going to be quiet, OMG I'm gonna have a quiet car...thank god.

One less inspection problem...a bunch more to go.

Next time go to Napa, they use fel-pro gaskets and it's something like 7 or 8 bucks. 4g manifold studs are like $1.20 each with nut and washer. I understand it's too late now, But good for future refrence. Dont buy parts from the dealer unless it's a dealer-only part; You'll lose every time.

Damn it's 8$ from autozone...but I can't wait the shipping time it's not an instore item.

Should have gone to mcmaster.com and ordered some stainless steel studs and nuts. If you have to replace, you might as well upgrade.

First off, glad to see you got these out without any major issue :thumbsup . If this ever happens to you or someone else who is trying to search this up, I know the vise grips work, but if you have a small pipe wrench handy, try using that :) Thats what i always use to get broken bolts free. If that doesn't work, like someone else said, you would have to drill it out with a cobalt (or some other kind of HARDENED drill bit, a HSS one will dull out before even going anywhere) and an extractor of some sorts. I'm glad to see you got these out without a problem though because i know just how much of a PIA they can be! And you can typically buy SS studs and nuts at a hardware store for cheap :) These are just tips for anyone in the future that is searching this up :thumbsup

I've had to weld over broken bolts many'a times at my work. If you can't manage to drill them due to clearence, or whatever reason, putting a nut over top and welding it (I use MIG, whatever...) will give you something to grab ahold of. Just have to make sure you actually weld the stud, not just the walls of the nut.
