Just got the head back from the machine shop today and was making sure everything was cleaned up. Below is a picure of the one cam cap that looks like it had two oil passages that are circled in red. Right now there is what looks like old oil that had hardened or something and nothing would be able to get past it. Should it be cleaned out or for some reason is there sealant in there?


Then for the half moon. Doesn't appear to have a gasket is it just sealed by the way its installed?


Finally, for the cam seals. Whats the best way to install them? Just put them in dry or should i put some sort of sealant around the whole circumference where it seals between the cam cap and the head?

I don't think I've ever seen those passages cut into another head. Weird..

As for the cam seals, I usually just tap them in dry with a large socket.

when i did mine, they were cloged with the anarobic sealent so i cleaned them out before i resealed the caps. did it help anything? i have no idea, and i wont know till i take the caps off again.

as for the half-moon, i used anarobic sealent like i used to seal the endcaps. some just use the same black sealent that they used on the valve cover. ive heard both ways.

I hope this makes sense. Those oil passages are there to drain the oil that escapes through the cam seal area back into the head. You need to scrape that old dried up oil out of them.

And as for the half moon. If you never took it out, leave it alone. If it has been taken out, use some sealant before sliding it back in.

Run a bead of sealant over the top of it right before you sit the valve cover back on as well.
