107460, Crazy EGT gauge. Posted by eclipse982nrRST, Jan-24-08 02:02 AM
I started up the car the other day again, and I noticed that my EGT gauge is going nuts, the needle that is. I had this problem a long time ago and the cause was the jam nut came loose on the fitting on the manifold, tightened it was okay. Only thing now is that the gauge needle starts going whacko even when I just key up, not starting the car. Just checking to see if anyone has ever experienced this.

Mine does the same thing the jam nut stripped on the end of mine and I sorta rigged it up to work now, but it still fluctuates and bounces around. Extremely annoying. I believe the vibration from my prothane motor mounts is the culprit, besides the stripped nut.
My solution this spring is to get a Team RIP probe and replace.

weird thing is, the gauge and sensor and BRAND NEW. I thought it was the jam nut again, but I checked and its okay. I am thinking it could possibly be a bad ground. But its grounded same place it has been for 3 years now.

If it's an Autometer, call them up and send it back for a replacement. Could always try a new ground too. :shrug

Same thing happened to me before... the EGR pipe melted the wire and it was grounding out.

Yea, I seen that. I searched before this and read your post about that.
I have no EGR though.

same thing happened to mine until eventually it stopped working altogether. My car has been down since then but i am going to put in a tre probe and see if the problem goes away. I hope thats all it is. Good luck trying to figure it out.
