107156, AEM F/IC unit Posted by kevox, Dec-16-07 02:22 PM
http://www.extremepsi.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=20768&cat=1480&page=1 I searched around here for info on this and really all I found was "No one has really had any experience with the thing yet but it looks promising." but that was back in '06 so I was HOPING that someone has toyed with it on the 420A since then?
Basically I need a fuel management fix because my C2's are causing my ECU to nearly flood the engine with fuel - lowering my fuel mileage from 21mpg to 14.25mpg! I'm tryna get back up to 20mpg again....is this likely to do what I want it to?
Also, would this just go to waste when I upgraded the fuel system (not sure what to yet) even more to accomodate 15 or more PSI from my 20g turbo?
Right now I'm trying to find a "cheap" fuel management fix that will drastically raise my mileage back to normal BUT not be obsolete when it comes time to upgrade the fuel system even more...your thoughts and suggestions are welcome! thanks

I asked specifically about Megasquirt a couple days ago - where to get it and if anyone could piece it together for me into one "package" - and no one responded...I'd love to go MS if I could get someone to show me where I can buy it from and then if someone could point me towards a step-by-step of the installation...that would be awesome.

Not being an ass or anything, but you just got to search around on here b/c the information is there.
Here is a write-up on the Megasquirt-n-spark installation:

These are some sites where you can get megasquirt from and have good tech support for the 420a.

Nobody here is going to make you a list of all the links so you can have yourself a "package". Just have to do the research on your own. The links BoostedEclipse posted are some good ones to start out with. Research what you need and then search for some reputable vendors to buy the stuff from.

There are at least two people on this board who do that. There are some general installation instructions with pics on the site. I could give you the info just like that, but honestly I am seeing no effort on your part to do some of the grunt work of finding the information. Therefore, I would be very leery about you putting in the time and effort to make MSnS work properly on your car.
Just my 2 cents.

I didnt respond because I am tired of some people playing the undercutting game. I make them but its a 2 week wait and if your in a hurry, i am not interested.

I'm not in that big of a hurry, trust me after the lengthy rebuild I've succumbed to (over 4 months without a car) I'm in no hurry!
Nobody here is going to make you a list of all the links so you can have yourself a "package". I am not the mechanic working on this. I have very little knowledge in this area and I heard that the Megasquirt system is comprised of a bunch of little bits & parts that you need to piece together and buy separately to get it to work properly that's why I was asking for a link to the whole package - because I can't be trusted to piece it together myself! I will not be doing the install either so please don't worry about not setting it up properly - if I knew how I would but I'm not about to go trial & error with my own hands on this $8000 project.
I'm sorry guys if it seems like I'm unwilling to search but that's not true...I searched "Megasquirt" and only got like 4 threads - none of which helped me out. Believe it or not, it's true. Maybe my ISP is just biased towards numerous results? I don't know but that's all I could find.
Star Turbo Talon, would you build a kit for me (or however that sentence should be worded)?

OK, then my understanding is that you are basically the end user. Cool.
Then I would reccomend that you buy from Terry. Nothing against the others that are out there, I have just used him as my primary provider of MSnS units. His kits come complete with install information and start up "maps". He is relatively quickly available for any questions that your installer may have.
And, no, no blow jobs were transfered for this endorsement (nor will they be).
As for adaptability, MSnS is excellent for when you upgrade.

Ok one other question: I remember reading somewhere that the MS requires a 1:1 FPR, is this true or is that just a recommendation and I could go with a 7:1 or 10:10 FPR? I was thinking closer to 7:1 myself for running 16psi at peak periods and 10psi daily - it seems to me that a 1:1 ratio just wouldn't supply enough fuel pressure?

That's why you use correctly sized injectors. 1:1 is plenty of fuel pressure if you use the right injectors for the pllication - the only reason to use a high rate of rise regulator is if the injectors are too small.

107203, RE: AEM F/IC unit Posted by kevox, Dec-20-07 05:44 AM
Hmm...I was thinking I should go with 550cc injectors based on a formula I found in the archives here - for running 325hp aka full boost (16psi in my case) every day. But it seems to me that I would get too much fuel then when I lowered the boost to 10psi - which is what I plan to run it at daily...will I still run rich doing this or will MS be able to adjust things accordingly when I simply switch from low to high boost?
The formula was something like:
Hp x .525 x 10.5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ # of Injectors
Then it proceeded to say that you usually onlt want to run your injectors at 80% capacity so to take the number you get above and divide it by 0.85...using that formula and 300hp (what I expect to get at a bare minimum with 16psi and a heavily modified engine) I get 486cc injectors required...well they only make 450 and 550 so thats why I was thinking 550, is that a wise choice in this case?

There are multiple ways of controlling fuel flow. Mechanical means include FMU's and S-FMU's. Electronic means include varying the pulse width going to the injectors using a variety of electronic controllers, including Megasquirt. For the most part Megasquirt can control very large injectors with ease, just by adjusting the injector pulsewidth. Sometimes MS can't handle extraordinarily large injectors (1200cc/min+) since its PW resolution is only so high; but there are work-arounds, including a high-res code variant. While using electronic means of fuel flow control 1:1 AFPR's are simply used to help control fuel flow under vacuum and to balance the fuel pressure against boost pressure (hence the 1:1 ratio).

Ah ok, that helps...thanks for clearing that up for me, 550cc it is then since it is widely variable with MS anyways :)
