107049, 420a Talon and 420A Eclipse... Posted by kevox, Dec-05-07 03:41 AM
Ok so call me stupid but as far as I know the Eclipse 420a is made by Mitsubishi and the Talon 420a is made by Chrysler so I've been wondering how can they be the same exact engine if they're manufactured by different companies? Surely Mitsu didn't employ Chrysler for their Eclipse motor?
There isn't much of a point to this; it's just something that's been bothering me for a few days so I thought I'd find the facts behind it and end my misery...lol

Pre-'95 model year, they were made by Diamond Star Motors - a joint manufacturing venture between Chrysler and Mitsu. Post-'95 model year, they were all made by Mitsubishi, with Daimler-Chrysler owning a majority share in MMNA anyway making the DSM joint venture moot.
manufacturers with close ties will use other manufacturer's motors in their platforms all the time to save money. See Mitsu/Hyundai, Mitsu/Chrysler, Mitsu/Chrysler/Hyundai world engine.

i thought the 1995+ 420A's were made strictly by chrysler, just with the head revised to fit mitsubishi fraims and such. were they built at a mitsubishi plant, or chrysler plant?

The 420A engines have always been manufactured at a Chrysler assembly plant in Mexico. Look under your valvecover at the head casting :-)
The Normal, IL assembly plant reverted to MMNA after DSM ceased to be.

everything is the same except the badging, and some other minor cosmetics depending on the year, everything
Edit: sorry, taillights, I'd group those under major cosmetics since changing them out requires cutting/welding
