Ok so tonight my dad and i are going to pull my engine out to rebuilt it over the next few months. From what ive been reading about tips on past posts that i should

-bags for organizing small pieces
-remove the radiator
-Remove the crank pully
-Tilt engine towards passenger side
-take the tranny with it also

I think thats all? Is there anymore tips or advive that i need to know of?

if you take the tranny out with the engine, there is no need to take off the crank pulley first. Just make sure you label all bolts in baggies, mark all vacuum lines (even though there are only a few), mark all sensor pigtails, and take your time. Its not very complicated, it just takes some time. Good luck and let us know how it goes

Its easier to leave the tranny in unless you have work to do in it as well.

Yes. Leave the transmission alone. Don't mess with draining that and buying 3 quarts of dealership-only, $25 a bottle, fluid to fill your 2.1 quart transmission. Remove the crank pulley (rent the proper tool from Autozone - do NOT use some 3-arm POS you have lying about) and have at it.

uh hah ok i lied i thought we were going to pull it but we had trouble gettiny a cherry picker over to my house

so all we did was put the front on jack stands, removed the front two wheels, and drained all the fluids..

i think maybe some time next week my dad and i will get the cherry picker over somehow lol but yeah its gona be like a 3 month process and yes i will keep updated and with pictures too...

uhh so keep the tranny in?

I pulled the trans with mine, just drained the trans fluid into a container, and strained it when i poured it back in. Seemed easier & quicker than when I left tranny in.

If you are really good at maneuvering the engine, you can get it out without taking the crank pulley off. You just have to work it around. I've pulled my engine 4 times with it still on and found it a little easier to do it that way. Also I needed to gently pry the engine (with clutch unbolted...it's a hell of a lot easier, I've done it both ways) away from the bell housing on exit and entrance both. Another thing is that you shouldn't have to remove the radiator...but maybe the fans. Like the guys said, take your time, and do things well. And make sure you don't miss the little things such as your bedplate to block o-ring upon rebuild or mix your rod caps. I forgot about the o-ring and had to pull it and reassemble the bottom end again. I also mixed rod caps 2 and 3 and spun another bearing after 850 miles of LOW oil pressure lol. Just be careful man and take your time. Just my .02

ahha alright. Thanks for the tips. My dad disconected the IC piping. And then the next day i took off the radiator, turbo, exhaust pipe, and unplug some wires. heres what we done so far. Also with all the vac lines and other wires from the back of the engine, its so cramped back there and like no room. Is there like any way to help make it easier to get them?

I've always left the radiator and turbo in. No real need to remove them.

I don't disconnect the wires until I'm in the process of lifting the engine. It's too difficult to reach them and some of those connectors are a bitch even when you do have a good reach at them. I wait until the engine is raised about a foot before I disconnect, and likewise, when I'm lowering the engine back in, that's the point where I reconnect them.

Ive always had better luck pulling both engine and trans as for the wiring on must cars you can just un plug the ECU and take the wiring with the motor Ive only pulled mine once tho and that was 5years ago in my Avenger must the time I drop them out the bottem to but thats only easy with a lift

If you decide to pull the tranny the axles can be a pain in the ass the first time you mess with them. I can't remember the post that covers it but I do think there is a writeup somewhere and it helped me out a ton. If you're not familiar with it let me know and I'll try to track it down. If you've already planned this out then nevermind.

oh yeah thanks guys. Uh its still on delay cause of me and my dad not being able to spare time for this lol, well i got all winter and plus im driving his car, wooo RWD :p

as far as leaving tranny in thats how i did it first time and left crank pulley in was just a pain in the butt, as far as taking crank pulley off good luck i had to use a special one designed just for 420a motors made from snap on cause all the rest didnt work.

ok wow a month later ahah. Ok so i was at work while my dad pulled my engine alone -.- he got impatient lol. So now we are on the process of tearing it apart. some new pictures and now just got to start working my ass off for money lol

taking the crank pulley was the easy part, it's putting it back on that is a total *****!! After banging on the pulley with a 2x4 and a 5lb. hammer, i said **** it and got my dad's propane torch and a thick leather glove.

never had issure putting it back on it was taking it off except when i got a performance pulley i had to sit and grind it out forever before i finally got it to fit.

dont really need a cherry picker. ived dropped the engine down before, i took everything of i needed,. head and all. and then lowered the engine down.

ok so what sunday, we disconected a few more lines, and i took out the a/c compresssor and all of that. OMG what a freaking bitch. I knocked my knuckled alot of taking those bolts out. damn. uh now we are debating on leaving it out or not when we put it back it. But ya small update but took awhile to do all cause its so freaking cold in the garage brrrr

well, i took my a/c out and left it out. Mainly because I have a 3" down pipe and the a/c compressor was in the way. So, sacrifice comfort for performance is how i see it :) I dont know where you are from or how hot your summers get, but I live in south texas and it just recently got around 50* outside lol. But i guess im a crazy SOB, I drive around with the heater on all the time to extract heat from the engine to make things run a little cooler, so not having an a/c doesnt bother me one bit...My g/f on the other hand refuses to ride in my car lol oh well.

Ok so we got it all set out and are ready for the rebuilding process. Uh i posted some pics that are above? idk why lol But soon it wil lbe sent off to get tuned and all that good stuff wooh

uh ok so i got time to state what was wrong. So i have a blown head gasket, also i found water in my oil which wasnt good, a cracked ring on cylinder number 3. Also we found that one of the journals on the crank had a pretty back scratch.. We luckily found that now since the engine wouldnt of lasted much longer. Hopefully the guy can polish it out for us. But yeah we sent it to a guy to get all ported and polished and hes gona pressurize it to find the leak. So far thats all just going to wait on price checks and when he calls back. I hate waiting >.<

u should have dropped it out the bottom its so much easier! ive pulled two from the top and two from the bottom and id say from the bottom is def easier.

ooook so its been like what 6 months now?? we finally got enough money to pay for my rebuild.. The guy is ordering parts for us.. So im getting pistons, cams, and rods. The head is completely redone too. Any more advice/suggestions that i should add to this?

about the trans oil, i went to autozone and they have it, i didnt have to go to the dealership... and what happened to your car, where you running stock pistions.

Yeah it was running stock interals for like 2 years and when i bought the car of course i ran it a little hard and then crack a ring and blew my head gasket.

it should just be standard gear oil right? i bought mine at advance auto when i put in a new engine. i am having some problems with my tranny popping out of gear, something i dont know?

I always go in and out the bottom but it helps that I have access to a lift. I have on occasion used a cherry picker to lift the front end up and used a really heavy duty creaper to roll the engine/tranny out then back under there when I was ready to reinstall. I do have pics of the engine going in from under using a lift but they are not loaded in my putfile right now. But here's a link to my Eclipse Engine rebuild album if you want to look. Yes I did reassemble my engine on a work bench. Talk about a pain in the Ass. LOL.
