106673, Check engine on an upHill Posted by synergy2981, Oct-26-07 09:40 AM
I have a 97 Eclipse RS.
The Check Engine Light comes and goes. I noticed that it usually comes up when I drive uphill. The light would stay there for so many days then disappear. Then, at times it would go back usually on an uphill (i.e. bridge, exit).
The engine is stock besides to the after market radiator cap.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.

Need cel info. Hit Advance Auto for a cel check next time it happens.

+1 but it sounds like it could be egr related because egr only kicks on during certain engine conditions. Too hard to tell you what it is though, too many things it could be. Just next time it happens take it to an auto store that pulls codes, most of the time its free!

The check engine disappeared by itself again.

Advance may still be able to pull code. Go there and check. It's free

If the CEL only comes on during a hill I'd imagine it to be a low fluid level. Check the level of you other fluids and run it into Advanced if that light ever comes back.

Good call, but I can't think of any fluid which doesn't have its own level light. Wipers, brakes, fuel, coolant, oil. What else is there? :wary
Being a 97, the next time this happens, pull over to the side of the road right away and try to do the keydance. Instructions for the keydance are in the wiki under cars>maintenance>trouble codes.
You should be able to pull the codes through the CEL. Let us know what it is.
When the light does come on, does it usually flicker as it comes on/off? Could be a sign of a loose wire somewhere shorting something out when you hit the inclines. :shrug

I still think it may be an EGR code, there are several different reasons why the cel will set with egr and then when the condition does not repeat itself withing 3 drive cycles it clears it. Just like its already been said, either buy a code reader or take it to advancedauto or similar and they can check it!

mine used to come on uphill, and then go off like that, and i went to advance auto, while it was still on, and the code was for a vehicle speed sensor A...so idk..
