cool so at the junk yard i'm looking for my block i came across a few neons while there and noticed one with the head already removed and looked like it was removed not to long before i arrived so i look at the milage and its at 93000 and was originaly a automatic transmission so more then likely it didnt get the crap kicked out of it by the previous owner,well heres the problem without the head i have no idea if its a sohc or dohc?how would i identify this?oh and the donor car was manufactuerd in june of 96 did they use the 95 block still? one more question..where are those breather ports im sapposed to block???sorry for the question raid but couldnt find nothing on google for any of this.:scratch ....HELP!

ok.......... the dohc and sohc blocks are exactly the same. the only difference in blocks in the 1st gen neons was the crank case ventilatiion that the 95's used. the 95's did the breathing through the block not the valve cover like the 96 and newer cars. anyways if its a 95 block (which I dont think it would be) there will be 2 holes on the front of the block that face upwards......... one is about 3/4" and one is about 1 1/4" wide (just guessing cause i dont have mine in front of me right now)........... they are very noticable so u shouldnt have an issue locating them if they are there.

2 things; Mike's got you covered on the block situation BUT, I just want to reiterate a point that was brought up previously (though from what you are saying, probably doesn't pertain to you). IF you have a 95 block, and IF you were to rebuild it, you should know that the main bearings are a little different for the 95 (they have to do with the positioning tangs). If you wanted bearings for these, you could simply order off of partsdinosaur for the 95 block. No big deal, just a point to make.

The second thing: I see from your post that you like question marks but not periods. Please try to use them because I get winded from reading all those run on sentences ;-)

i didnt even think to mention that mark. funny thing is when i rebuilt mine i had to go through that main bearing dilema with napa cause i was putting a 96 block in my 95 car and we didnt know which ones to get............ good call sir.

cool thx for the heads up,just more useful information for the brain to digest,I wish they wouldnt switch things over like that.thats all you need after a rebuild is a tear down because the bearings were for 96-99...that would totaly suck.

They wouldn't have fit in a 95 block if they were 96-99 bearings. The notches are in different locations.

oh and just to clear it up a little this isnt gonna be a rebuild its a complete bottom end i snagged at the yard,I was under the impression that sohc had lower compression pistons so i was hoping i might of got lucky and got one.Im assuming I didnt judging by the pistons they dont have a dip or nothing on the top that would idicate there low comp, just flat so looks like im sol.O well thx for all your input.

with neons the difference in compression is 9.8 for a sohc and 9.6 for dohc. there is a difference in the pistions but neither of them are dished. the combustons chambers are a bit difference also...... thats also effects ur comp ratio.
