106424, FCD killing my engine @ idle
Posted by twinvenges, Oct-06-07 05:56 AM
well, ive narrowed the prob down, after a reset ecu over night, the car (with FCD plugged in) runds perfect! if i turn it off, i can hear the iac just make noise.. as try to restart, it just cranks, i have to give it throttle to make it start, if i let off the car stumbles and dies. if i unplug the fcd i start it , it starts with out giving it gas, and then it dies a few sec later. then it will thro cel 14 map voltage outa whack. if i then plug FCD back in, it seems to start fine, which points me at the fcd, its a vicolata (sp) FCD, and i havent set it yet, could that be the issue? so far it seems like that may be it, any thoughts?

Probably have it hooked up wrong. PM him about it. I had a similar problem and 2 wires were mixed up.

I concur, it's probably not installed correctly. Take a look here to review the installation instructions relevant for your version:

http://www.symtechlabs.com/Support/Support.html

Unless you reconnected the MAP signal when you 'unplug' the FCD, it would make sense that the car wouldn't run well. The ECU wouldn't be receiving any MAP signal...

you site is where i got the install info, but the labels were gone on my unit, i opend it up to find what red wire was the 12v sourse, and what was the 5v signal, the 2 green wires i have right, but the 2 red ones are ?able.. when i opended it up on the chip there was a +12 and a red wire, so i assumed that was the 12 v lead is that correct?

If you can take a picture of the open FCD, I can confirm the pinout for you... Unfortunately you're using a version that we don't produce anymore.

I have a picture diagram with labels I made so I wouldn't forget the wiring again on my home computer. I will post it up around 4-5 today when I get done with work.

I've uploaded a pinout here for anyone else who runs into a similar problem...

symtechlabs.com/Support/FCD_V1_Pinout.jpg

From the top to bottom, the wire assignments in your picture are as follows:

*VREF
*+12V
*GROUND
*OUT
*IN

I apologize for the inconvenience!

thanx guys! ill check the wiring.

what happens if the wiring is ok?> should i attpemt to set the pot?

Are you the same person as the OP?

I would recommend following the instructions to tune the FCD if you haven't already done so.

Also, can you give me a little back story? Is this the first time the FCD has been installed? What brought about this trouble?
106452, RE: FCD killing my engine @ idle
Posted by streetlightning, Oct-08-07 11:39 AM
shit, yea , same as OP. yea first time used, and upun first startup this trouble started happening, so either its wired wrong, or not set right, or some how esd or sumthign go to it, if i take it outa the equation, with the map hooked up correctly, i dont see probs.

It's pretty robust, with plenty of overvoltage protection... I doubt ESD damaged the main chip.

While I don't want to neglect responsibility for our product; the chances of a manufacturing error are very slim. Each and every unit is fully tested before being shipped.

Out of the hundreds of units sold, no unit has been returned and identified as malfunctioning.

In most cases a wire has simply been connected improperly. I recommend re-tracing your steps and carefully re-reading the installation instructions. It also wouldn't hurt to monitor the output with a multimeter to confirm that the output is correct.

You didn't happen to receive a NTN ("not tuned note") with yours, did you?

yea, ill check it over for sure (havent had time yet, ill get to it tonight) and no, i dont recal having seen a note like that. when i tune it, do i need to tune it for like 4.75v@ ~1+ psi,

PS thanx total eclipse for those pix! very helpful to have visuals lol!!
106456, RE: FCD killing my engine @ idle
Posted by VelocitaPaola, Oct-08-07 12:27 PM
I tune them at about 4.58V @ 1psi+, but you'll find that every MAP sensor reacts a little differently.

i turn car key on, and with map out, as in atmosphere, i get like 1.5v, as i blow into it, v dosent change too much? so i set it to 4.7v wile blowing in it, but when i let off my blow (lol) nothign voltage wise happens. is this correct? i am using the ground on the map is that wrong?

No, if I remember correctly, the you should have a reading close to 4.5V with the key in the "on," and the MAP exposed to atmospheric pressure.

Take a look here for a diagram of where to place the multimeter leads to test the unit:

http://www.symtechlabs.com/Support/FCDInstall3420A.pdf

Don't get confused, those instructions aren't exactly for your version FCD, but the test diagram still applies.

It sounds like the unit is powering up, which means it's grounded correctly too... are you sure the IN and OUT wires are facing the right ways?
106461, RE: FCD killing my engine @ idle
Posted by twinvenges, Oct-08-07 04:52 PM
i set it to 4.7 @ atmospheric press with key on, so that should be set then correct?

edit: still same problem..even if i blow into it, no press change. wtf? the wiring is right, and im probing the output and the FCG ground.. @ atmosphere i set to 4.7v, and i still cant turn the car on , i get a code 14.
106462, RE: FCD killing my engine @ idle
Posted by VelocitaPaola, Oct-08-07 07:09 PM
No, it needs to be set to +4.7V or lower when the sensor is pressurized. Irregardless, it sounds like your problems are elsewhere.

Have you tried measuring what the input voltage is? At atmospheric, the MAP (without the FCD) should generate something like 4.5V. Generally, if the circuit in the FCD is bad, the output voltage levels mimic something closer to the main power (+12V), not the levels you're describing. Perhaps, your MAP sensor is bad?

Beyond that, could you snap a few pictures of the FCD connections to the MAP sensor harness and +12V line? Also check the harness near the EGR dump tube for burns and melted wires.

Of course, you're welcome to send the unit back; but I'm trying to save you time since the problems you're describing are inconsistent with a malfunctioning unit.

i dont have an egr or egr tube. all connections are solderd. im not under standing what would make this do this..i reset ecu aand it starts, same symptoms, if i turn the car off, bam crank no start code 14 and my IAT goes whack and buzzes. with the FCD bypassed, i dont see this probs.. ie its gotta be the fcd, ill measure the input v.

when it starts the first time, it does fine, ill boost like 6 psi and no fuel cut.. the only way to make it start again seems to be re-setin the ECU.

I'm not trying to give you the "run around." As I said, you're more than welcome to send it back; I'm just trying to save you time.

Are you sure the FCD is getting a solid +12V whenever the car is turned on? That could be a big problem if it wasn't getting any power.

The only other possibility is a faulty unit (which I can confirm here for you) or improper installation (which I can also confirm if you take a few pictures of what goes where).

ill get pix. i hard wired it to 12v for trouble shootin pourposes.
the input v is 4.58 the out put is 4.48, and when i pressurize, no v change.

i know ur not givin me the run-around, uve been very helpful actually. and i appreciate it!

Posted by totaleclipse_05, Oct-08-07 07:46 PM
Your FCD may need to be turned up. Turn it up so it maxes out without blowing into it from the multimeter (will probably be 4.58v). Once you do that, blow into it and go from there with adjusting.
106467, RE: FCD killing my engine @ idle
Posted by streetlightning, Oct-09-07 05:16 AM
thas the prob tho, no mater where its set when i blow into it, no v change happens, i dont blow into it i lip lock it and blow , so theres psi in there..lol shit does that make me gay? hah halol
106468, RE: FCD killing my engine @ idle
Posted by totaleclipse_05, Oct-09-07 05:52 AM
Well with mine, if it's turned down TOO much, the voltage won't change even if I blow into it. I have to turn the FCD's voltage up AT LEAST to where there is atmospehric(sp) pressure (around the 4.5v) for it to register any boost readings. You have tried turning the FCD's voltage screw both ways? I think you turn it counter-clockwise to add voltage and clockwise to lower it. It's all hooked up correctly also, the IN and OUT are the right way?
106469, RE: FCD killing my engine @ idle
Posted by streetlightning, Oct-09-07 06:22 AM
yeah in and out are good, in v is 4.58, and out is 4.48, so ill try anr raise the v to above 4.5 and see if it does ne thing when i blow.

Update:

i had my Eletrical engineer @ work build me one, and well, same dam symtoms! i used the circut map thats on this site "home made FCD"

with no FCD's in the car runs great! as soon as i plug it in, i get no start just cranking...if i gas it i can get it to start, but if i let off, it dies..

Map is good, ive tried 2 of them as well. idk whats going on, im pretty sure that it CANT be the FCD, we tested this in the lab and it works just like it should, just like viceolata'(sp) does, so its sumthing else..

idk where or what to look at.. other wise the car runs great, am i screwed and just have to get a crappy missing link? ne 1 else have this issue?

Your car is quite the anomaly! We've effectively tested everything in the MAP sensor signal loop and come up empty handed. We know the MAP sensor and everything back to the ECU is working properly. The only thing left to malfunction is the ECU itself.

indeed, on the 2nd one i had rigged up @ work : car works repetadly (knocks on wood) i THINK. the problem was my 12v source was intermittant, as i was turnin the key on to get the 12v, some times i would have it, in which case i tested the in and out V and they were good, and sometimes, the 12v wouldnt be there, thus my out put was like .7v and my in was 5, so the circut wasnt complete. tried it hard wired again, seemed to fix it, wired to o2 voltage? (black.white wire) and seems to be GTG!! hopefully, i tried many times, and it keeps starting, so now i left it overnight and if it starts when i check it later, then i think that was the root cause lol.

i want to thank total eclipse and velocita especailly for all the help. its really appreciated, hope this help ppl in the future!! lol as for Velocita's product, if i needed another one, id buy it from him again! id just make sure to hook it to a good 12v source lol. thanx for the help guys! i hope this is the last i have to post about it!!

Glad to hear you got it going! So where did you have your 12v source from on the car when you were having problems? I ran a wire from the cig lighter power to it for the 12v source. There are other places I'm sure, but I felt that was good enough.

right now i cant rember, it was from the ecu b/c i use it to give 12v to my port fueler, but it only gives 12v with the engine on which is fine for the pf, but not for the map lol, ill look and get back to ya
