106239, Power Question for N/A Brotheren
Posted by TheGhost, Sep-18-07 10:54 AM
Im going to pick up a spare head, Intake Manifold and Header. I am going to port/polish the head and intake, as well as shave the head .20, my self with other bolt on mods and no bottom end work what am I looking at quatermile wise. And does anyone have any ideas about templates or porting tips and tricks. Also are there any pistons that would fit in a 420a from another motor that would bump compression. Any help would be cool.

Mark or driggs would probably be the best guys to talk to on that one.

I would venture a guess at low 16s or high 15s. Cams, high comp bottom end and some serious work on a flow bench would net the most gains.

I may be wrong though.

No way of knowing, man. You sure you wouldn't rather just buy a head that's ready to go? If so, I've got one going to be for sale soon. :shrug ETs are a function of driver skill and car set up, moreso than headwork. (Although headwork is the way to go on an NA DSM.)

Good luck to you.

would this magic head be good for turbo use I know you are an all motor guy. Work is getting good and I need to buy a new toy for my car.

Captain Half-Ass? :wary

This head should be good for turbo. If anything, it could be hogged out a bit more. It was ported by Eddy Fierro and has 1mm oversized stainless valves all around, 5 angle, Crower springs and Crower Ti retainers. Turbos respond well to anything which allows greater volumes of air to be rammed into the combustion chamber. This head would be fine. For NA applications, the shape of the ports is designed with velocity in mind over volume. This is a bad ass head. It's worth more than the rest of the car.

If Brian would stop selling his wares in here, maybe I could get a word in edgewise, lol.

But ACTUALLY, if you are paying someone to do the machine and assembly work, the Dr's head is the way to go. Eddie is a top notch porter. An average porter (or machinist who wants to be "the guy"), can actually lose you power (especially NA). And Brian's head has all the work that needs to be done on it (minus the decking). Crap! Now I'm selling his wares.

As for pistons, I don't know of any stockers that would UP compression, though there are Neons out there that would lower comp.

I didn't address your porting question because basically I have my own method of porting. I have given up on talking about my thoughts behind why I port and what I choose to leave etc., because, invariably, it causes the "lawyers" and "theorists" to come out and argue with me. I do my port the way I see it and it definitely works. The only advice I would give on that is you could do a light port yourself, but leave the heavy porting to the guys like Eddie or Mike (AMM (?)on this board).

Oh yeah, your thought process to getting power out of our engines is good. Work on the top end to get the flow.

when it comes to porting the 420a heads im in the middle price range but at the top when it comes to quality. my latest all out race head with stock sized valves just did 301 cfm on the intake and 237 on the exhaust side @ .500". my basic "race" porting with stock size valves flows 278 on the intake and 233 on the exhaust @ .500". heres a pic of a 290 cfm intake port.......
