106126, long rod, questions before decision
Posted by barza21, Sep-10-07 07:47 AM
whats up dudes!! next month im going to start buying the pieces and parts for the turbo build (finally!!), i made up my mind and im going to buy the long rods along with some custom pistons for this set up. i have read that these longer rods give you more reving limit, is this right?? and also a little more torque, right? either way, i saw them on Howellautomotive.com for 350.00 the 5.608 stroker lenght rods.

couple of questions:

1) will these rods fit with the stock crank? from what i have read, i think yes, but just want to make sure.

2) the custom pistons that im going to buy bolt directly with these rods right? i have also read about this on howell, and i will call them before i order then, but i want to make sure.

3) do i just buy the regular main and rod bearings that i would have bought for the regualar lenght rod?? or do i have to get some custom ones also?

just to let you guys know that im doing this because im going big with a gt35r, and am planning on shooting big with some good tunning, so if there is somebody near albuquerque, NM that can help me that would be great, i asked on a different post and they told me that this set up should help me with this turbo, i just want to double check and make sure i am going down the right lane.

Thanks

Long rods increase the dwell time at TDC thus yes, giving you more torque.

1)+3) Yes your long rods will fit the stock crank. However before you about buying bearings you need to take the crank to a shop. Let them inspect it and make sure it is ok to re-use. If it's good its best to have them polish it up. If it's bad sometimes they can shave it down thus requiring different bearings. So its best to get the crank checked then buy the bearings the machinist tells you too.

About Howell. I would try to avoid them as much as possible. They are known for horrible customer service and very delayed shipping. Try some of these:

2) Not to sure how the fit works with the long rods. However I do know that you need a special ring. Its called a rail support. In the oil groove of the piston there are normally 3 rings (Ya I can't rememeber what they're called) the rail support goes underneath those three. Without it your pistons won't seal. Hope that helps and I'm sure other people can contribute.

I have the long rod kit from Howell and drive daily on this set-up.
I had my crank polished to standard and thats all that was necessary. I would also race balance the crank with this set-up and install a crank scraper. 2 very cheap mods to be able to use the increased torque to its full potential.

If you buy the kit you will recieve the pistons and pins you need for these rods, which are necessary, because the wrist pin actually seats higher up in the piston head.

What bearings you need will depends on how much polishing is required to completely remove any grooves on the crank. This set-up with a 3" turboback exhaust will help spool that gt35r a little bit faster.
