106099, Engine Mod Question for 97 Eclipse NT 5sp MT
Posted by wolvorine4424, Sep-08-07 05:42 PM
Can an Evo 8 engine be installed in the 97 Eclipse NT.
Is this posible???

Picture of Evo 8 Engine Bay... Engine is on the same side.

If yes: What mods should I expect?
If not: What will not line up or fit?

I do not own an Evo, I just seen it at the dealer with the hood open. and then it just hit me. What if i can install it in my car. I always thought it was on the other side of the enginebay so I never asked about it.

Before everyone flames you on this as this question has been asked over and over again. I've heard it done once and even with it in you needed the mirage tranny to be FWD, otherwise you're Shit out of luck trying to get that thing AWD. Everyone here will probably agree it's not worth the headache. Besides working on that would be a PITA imo.
You should do the 2.4l swap.

Yep. 2.4 it up. Fab work, custom mount, rewires, piston hunting (srt4 ftw), injectors, custom bracketry, oil pump.........the usual motor swap shit. There should be a swap kit....but there isn't one. The industry is slack. RRE, get off your asses and make it happen.

Why alot of people FREAK OUT thinking it's hella expensive to do or a pain in the ass have probably never swapped a motor. I was tossed into the sport compact scene swapping motors. You can drop that evo engine in your car but be prepared for custom mounts, shift linkage, axle swaping, cutting/welding in the engine bay possibly, and my favorite....not having your gauges work for a while. Alot of people will tell you it's not worth the hassle. Seeing as everything is in-line for the most part, i dont see why it isn't a proper candidate for a new motor. Be the first to put that bad boy in. Nobody here is going to know how to pull it off in entirety until somebody does it.

I've seen crazier swaps. LS1 240's, sr-20'd civics, 2jz rx-7's........ The way i see it is after you have the 420a pulled and have the evo motor mocked up in the bay everything else will follow.

I already have the ECU and the Control/ECU Wire Harness...
I can Make the Rest up.

So This is even more interesting, Because everyone said that it cant be done...

OK, I have to get the Engine/Tranny and the DriveLine Components. Will see what I can get going here...

P.S. I have a Body Shop, Welding Shop and 1 Crazy Guy at my Disposal. Lets see what we all can come up with...

If most of the mesurements are promesing, I do have another Eclipse w/ a 420A I can use for this. If we do start on this, I will post pics and details on what was done to make it happen.

We never said it couldn't be done, Yes it can be if you have enough time and money. The reason most people will flame out a thread like this is, because the average person that asks about this has A)None of the tools to do it. B)No money for the motor itself, C)the knowledge of what is all required for the swap (measurements, electrical, welding/cutting etc), D)Or they think it's like a honda and swapping 2 totally different motors is absolute direct swap and never think everything fully through. Now I did mentioned that it has been done before, from what I was told it was a pretty straight foreward drop supposedly and needing the Mirage tranny to keep it FWD, but that is the only one I am aware of that has done that swap. AWD is a whole other story.

If you do make it happen FWD or AWD, please do post up pics and a write up of how exactly you did it and what not. This will be pretty interesting to see when it's complete.

Well, I was looking for a motor and trany the whole day...

So far everything looks good...

The only thing I'm woried about is how much of a computer controlled Driveline is it???
I hope there is NO wires going to the Diffs (Front or Rear) because if there are, I will need to get more computers from the car...

Now, here is my question. What REAR end i should look for?
Well, Its not that important now... I'll worry about the Engine and Trany for now...

P.S. I do want to have it AWD.
I have Mitchells OnDemand, so I will start looking up wireing and go from there...

And there it is.

Any swap is possible with enough time, effort and money. If you really wanted to try something new like this, I'd advise you to source your engine and transmission first, then find an almost free 2G shell somewhere in which to mock it all up and have a go at it. The day you blindly yank the engine out of your current car in order to try something like this could very well be the last day your current car ever drives again. Food for thought...

Just drop a viper engine in to your eclipse to compete with the Viper-Talon Turby is cooking up :P

Well, I dont think a Viper motor will fit, But for some reason it does fit The rear of my eclipse will be in the air (Anyone with an elefant I can use to add weight to the rear of the car)...

UPDATE:
Everything looks GOOD so far.

So: Engine, Intake, 6 sp MT, Driveshaft and REAR on order now...
We are aiming for an AWD Eclipse... We may need more parts, But we dont need them NOW, so the rest can wait.

I already have the wireing for the whole Evo8 MR... ECU and the Harness.
Seems easy to hack into my Eclipse... Lets hope its as easy as it looks.

Will keep you posted, When I get the parts. I will take pics of the car.

Also, My friend works for a steel company with CNC and other machines. He can make mounts and other things to make it look professional.

EDIT:

If anyone has an EVO MR. Can you please take a PIC of the enginebay (It needs to be looking strait down) Just need to know all the positioning...

If not, I will go to the delear and take one pic of there cars... (Cant find the right one on Google) all the pics are angled to much.

Let me know when you are ready to part out that poor eclipse after you destroy it... I am always looking for a few extra parts.

I dont think that will happen...

Will see how it works out. Well, at least I have another one just like it... So I can use my current built motor in that one...

Oh boy, another Newb who thinks he can do the infamous swap...

+1 with DJ on the partout

OP, I don't know what you are looking to gain by adding a 4G63 to your current 420a car. Even GST/GSX owners don't tell their fellow owners to swap in an EVO engine. You are going to be spending probably over $5000 to even get that thing in the car and you could have spent it on forged engine internals for your 420a and it would be just as good with A LOT less work. The reason it hasn't been done before yet is that people that want to do it realize what a dumb idea it is and waste of money. There have been attempts at this swap, but it has NEVER been completed and the cars have NEVER run. You will be junking a perfectly good car so if that's what you want to do, go for it.
106136, RE: Engine Mod Question for 97 Eclipse NT 5sp MT
Posted by wolvorine4424, Sep-11-07 07:42 AM
Well, I do see your point. But I want to be the first to succed...

Plus the GST/GSX motors are on the Drivers side and the Evo is on the Pass Side of the Enginebay... So its easier to drop it into the eclipse with a 420a... not to mention the Intake and Exhuast is on the same side also... Also, the front Engine mount (next to timing cover) almost lines up with the body. just needs to be a little off center. this is a easy fix... Even the bolt pattern is the same. maybe my mount on the Evo Engine will be just what i'm looking for.

DAMN: Where the hell is the motor. I hate waiting.

UPDATE:
I already have a Harness made up for this car... to connect the EVO engine to my factory wireing using the EVO ECU... with addition to extra wires for the sensors/selinoids that are part of the Evo...

I already converted/hacked the EVAP system on my eclipse, so it will NOT give me the CEL/MIL light... Had alot of help here.

P.S. Give me a week, and I will know defenitly if it works out or not. Because I need to have the Engine Here. Its still in shipping.

NOTE: I have the cash to throw at it, I'm not woried about that. I want my Eclipse to be fast as hell (to the unexpected RICERS here). Also if everything works out great, I will Upgrade the EVO engine. And I WILL get at least 450 to 500HP out of it.

Now where talking, Just got my 6 speed trany. Damn, More computer plugs. I guess I will also need the Center DIFF computer and maybe others. This EVO has more computers in it, then I have in my house... Makes it fun. Plus there is no such thing as imposible.

Hopefully, I will have the motor by the end of the week.

Good for you (no sarcasm intended, lol). Life's a journey, not a destination. If you got the drive to go down that road, more power to you. Aim high and you'll never know where you can end up.

(Is that enough clique's?)

UPDATE:

Getting the engine tomorrow... finally.
Also I was reading an EVO forum and someone there stated that there is a way to mod the trany to just get the RWD and compleatly disconnect remove the Front axles...

Interesting, I wonder if its posible to this but with the rear drive. just leave the front...

Need to look into this. Sence I have the trany, I will play with it and see what Me and my friends can come up with...

BTW: I'm using parts from an 06 EVO MR. also I have the 6speed Trany.

It looks like it will fit nicely (some mods), But Not definite till tomorrow. when I get the motor...

Also, Here are my friends words. If we can get the motor/trany in. He WILL make it run. "getting it Running is not the problem, installing it is".

if you already have the center diff, grab a GSX rear axle and have a custom drive shaft made to connect the two. /shrug problem solved

things you're gonna have to deal with as well, switching to a AWD fuel tank, which won't fit in a FWD, the rear floor pan is too low so you're gonna have to rip out the trunk pan and put an awd trunk/floor pan in place for the clearance. also ganna need the whole AWD rear end for the diff/axles etc.

IIRC when I was screwing around with the measurements a while back for fun I realized the transfer case wouldn't fit so you'll have to modify the firewall for that as well and hope everything fits back on the inside of the car.

IMO you're crazy, but if you can get it to work that'll be awesome

if you don't I'm with Deej on getting parts off that sucker after it's thoroughly destroyed

Couple questions...

Are you using an 8 motor or a 9 motor. First you say 8 and that you have an 8 ecu/harness etc., but then you say you are getting parts off of an 06 MR which is a IX. The ECU and harness are different because of the MIVEC.

Second, if you've done any real research on the evo engine/drivetrain, you would have sourced a 5 speed tranny unless if you've got an MR ripe for picking parts from, since the 5 speed is stronger than the 6 speed.

Third, why would you want to disable the awd if you're going to bother putting it in?

Fourth, lets see some pics of what you've got/done so far as well as here some more credentials so we can all actually believe you, because I know most of us would like to believe you just because it's cool to see crazy swaps. Especially since there's been virtually nothing for 2gnts. Which is why were also excited to see turbo8u's viper powered 2gnt.

Posted by wolvorine4424, Sep-15-07 07:17 AM
Well, The trany is not the final one. I just got it because I want to start from the 6 speed, But i can go to a 5 speed...

I have seen a 06 Evo MR and it has a 6 speed trany in it.

I do prefer a AWD. but i will settle for a FWD if I have problems.
Also my friend already sugested on a Fuel Cell. So we do know about the Fuel Tank problem.

Not to mention, My Fuel system will be redone. I hate the original FPR in the rear of the car. I will make a return line from the enginebay to the tank.

BTW: I will have some pics for you in the next couple of days. First I will post pics on what the car looked like before we stripped it.
This is just way to much work, I always forget about taking pics.

Its only 2.3L stroker 6 bolt, the motor might be on the right side but it works.
