sorry this is so long guys, I'm kinda venting more than anything else. Yesterday coming home I downshifted to bleed off some speed from the highway to the offramp for my exit. I heard the all too familliar sound of a belt shredding and smacking around in the engine bay, battery light came on, I think "no big deal, I've got a spare belt for the alternator"

that's when it happened, all of a sudden the car sounded like a diesel downshifting and lost all power. I got it to the side of the road and popped the hood. the alternator belt had a few shreds still sitting in the engine bay, I expected that. I looked at the timing belt since I have the top half exposed. The edges were a bit ragged and I noticed the camgears looked odd (I was a little pissed and frustrated at this point so I wasn't sure why they were odd) I tried to start it but with the noise of the highway I couldn't tell if it was even turning.

looking at it later I saw that one of the cam gears is 180* out, and when cranking there is no resistance, just an occasional hollow "flub" sound. at least there's no rattling, clicking or clanking like broken or bent valves, I might have gotten lucky (I hope)

I've got a spare timing belt I'm gonna throw on and an extra head that just needs a little freshening if I really need it. I figure I'll get everything re-timed, see if it'll fire and do a compression test. I don't think I'll ever run without a complete timing cover again (anyone got a good spare?) any suggestions of what else I should do guys?

oH SHIAT! So thats what happened. Sucks man. Hopefully it'll be ok though, just a couple new belts.

I think you just convinced me to never take my belt cover off :P

I second that I thought about keeping the top off and bottom on from reading the 420a rebuild for BANME!s Newbies lol

There's small opening in between the Timing cover. I notice tonight when changin my plugs.
Try foxautosalvage.com they'll have the timing cover plus tons of DSM parts too. They do have it you just have to call them or email for pricing. The number is on there website.

They recently got another EVO this makes three two gray and one Black the newest one, with very minor damage

Bad deal i too was going to take the top cover off my timing belt after reading corbins post for us BANME!s that cant swap motors. Hope you get it back up and running soon

well, I'll be tearing into it on sunday, here's hoping I don't have to use my extra head. if it's nasty I'll post pics of the carnage

fox auto salvage didn't have any timing covers, but I found some in my area for ~$30 through car-part.com

I think I can get through this for under $200 bucks as long as I don't have damaged pistons.

update, fixing timing was a no-go, still no compression.

I may not get to the head till spring.

I was just getting used to how he drove again ;(
