105712, Cheap/Easy 420a Power Mods Posted by Willdue, Aug-16-07 06:53 AM
So i want a lil bit more power out of my 420a, without going overboard. No turbo, and nothing to expensive, I juss want a decently quick car.
So far I have:
CAI Apexi Catback Test Pipe NGK Plugs MSD Coil EGR Blockoff BBS SS
Im looking into getting a header and my test pipe installed...Could I find a cheap tuner after that? And then go for maybe a FPR & Injectors?

get an UDP, that helps, and maybe a grounding kit...

Read up in the Wiki:
http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=Power%20Stages
http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=BPU
And you shouldn't need to upgrade FPR or injectors.

You won't need an FPR or Injectors unless you go turbo. You could look into an SAFC for tuning though I guess.. I never went too far down the NA path though...

I ordered Adjustable cam gears. Are these an easy install? If not I can have them installed for 100$. Where should they be set to gain some HP?

to really get gains out of adjustable gears, you gotta be willing to spend some $$$$ to hit the dyno and play with the settings, otherwise they're just something pretty on the side of the engine, possibly a hinderance to power if not adjusted properly
Edit: unless you've done a few timing belt jobs on these cars, NO, these are not an easy install

Ok, on est., How much do they usually cost to get tuned?

here's what the shop near me charges for dyno time and they're the least expensive in town.
if you're really going for cheap and easy, get your money back and spend it on the simple stuff, a full exhaust really helps to uncork our cars, UDP and EGR blockoff (egr doesn't necessarily gain horses but you don't have to clean your intake as often.

Well im willing to spend that money to get the gears tuned. I think itll be worth it. And the UDP will be next.

sorry, missed that, if you're gonna go that far, do cams at the same time, and go ahead and do the timing belt, water pump and related pulleys while you're in there unless they've been replaced really recently.

timing belt was juss done like 10k ago. My friend is putting the gears on for 50$ and tunning them. So thats a good deal. Next i think i will get a header and a SAFC and thats it for a while.

I'd do the header first, more noticable gains, plus you'll have to retune the cams for the header

The SAFC has provide many a 2gnt'er with problems. Any large changes in fuel trim can have an adverse effect on timing due to the way the ECU taps into the wiring harness.

You know what?
Megasquirt and a datalogger isn't that much more expensive than an SAFC. I'm talking $100-$200 difference depending on new/used/choice of palm device...

SAFC isn't going to do shit for your stock engine, You arnt going to gain that much HP honestly, You will get a nice psychological gain with a full exhaust, UDP will make the biggest difference, a nice set of Adj cam gear with a good tune will also help, but first and foremost you should make sure you engine is indeed strong, go do a compression check, make sure if you have and CELs they don't need work, read read read, check you steering system! After you have done all your maintenance you are ready to make some power.
