105614, Engine stalls out and stops randomly Posted by olingern, Aug-12-07 10:36 AM
I have a 95 and in the past two weeks my car has stalled out for about 40 feet and then turns off. The throttle response becomes really faint followed by the engine quitting. After this happens the car won't start as in, the engine won't 'roll over.' The oil light appears when the car dies.
So I changed my oil and spark plugs to have a starting point on how to correct it. When I took the spark plugs out there seemed to be a bit of oil on two of them. Could this be the valve cover?
After the change the car did the same thing about 120 miles later w/ the oil light. After the car sat for a while it started up fine.
I'm not real big on trusting mechanics around my area because they make tons off us college kids. So any advice is awesome.

The oil light will come on if the car dies because it loses oil pressure as the motor stops spinning and the ECU is still on. That's normal and I wouldn't worry about it too much.
When it dies after running a bit get out and look on the fuel rail. You should see a cap for a valve stem on the fuel rail if I remember correctly. Use a key or a screwdriver and push on the stem inside that Schraeder(sp?) valve. See if it spits fuel out or it just dribbles. If the car slowly dies you may be losing fuel pressure. Since it is a 95 I wouldn't be surprised if the fuel pump is failing. Mostly since it is a 12 year old part that runs all the time.

when it dies, try cycling the key off and then back on..do you get any dash lights/hear the fuel pump run, etc. any sort of indications that youre getting power? i had a similar issue with my car, in that it would run fine, but on the occasion it would stall out, about every 2 days and it wouldnt restart, and i would have no dash lights, fuel pump, etc. if i let it sit for a while then it would restart, usually. one day i made the discovery that if i wiggle the PCM and tap on it with a screwdriver that it would restart. so i checked the connectors and they were fine. and to make a long story short, i swapped PCM's and it hasnt acted up since. just my .02

being a 95 the ECU could be going bad. as far as the oil in the spark wells, you need a new valve cover gasket set, $25-30 IIRC at any parts place. this could be causing a nasty misfire, it could be the cause of the stalling but you'd have to have at least 3 out of 4 plugs drowning in oil.

Could be the crank position sensor, my car was acting similair this spring and after trying a bunch of things that didn't work, I replaced the crank sensor (on the back of the block) and problem solved. I have a 96 though, I know the 95 ECUs are known for going bad, but the crank sensor is worth a try. Good luck.
