Ok guys...well, I admit I'm an official IDIOT because of one common mistake that I made. WEll I spun my rod bearing in cylinder 4 about a month and a half ago and have been rebuilding (awaiting parts, teardown, rebuild etc.) all friggen summer and I'm SO close to being finished when I realized I missed ONE little gasket the size of a quarter or a half-dollar - the bedplate-to-block o-ring. I read you have to pull the engine all over to put in that one gasket, but is there anyway you could do it from underneath the car with the engine slightly raised and supported by a cherry picker? Or does the engine HAVE to come all the way back out? Please someone tell me if can be done from the bottom and that it will just be a pain in the ass to do it that way...if not, I'm as good as fucked. Could anyone shed some light on this situation? Thanks in advance.

By the way...so just exactly how much of the engine needs to be disassembled? I know the oil pan has to come off , the oil pump bolts prob need to be loosened so I can get the bed plate off (I dont need to mess with my timing do I?.....) and the clutch/flywheel MIGHT need to be unbolted...am I missing anything or can I get lucky and pull pan off and undo the BP bolts to drop that?

You need to pull the motor and put the entire thing on a stand. Tear the whole assembly down to a few steps from square one, install that little red o-ring, re-install the bedplate with anaerobic sealant, reinstall the oil pump, oil pump pickup, et cetera, et cetera, then put the motor back in the car.

That sucks Ben, you were so close!

You're not the first one to forget this o-ring/gasket so don't feel too bad. You just get another practice run at pulling the engine :)

Well...an update.....The motor took about an hour and a half to pull and the paint on the pressure plate suffered (who cares...nothing is damaged but the paint job) and the engine is sitting upside down on an engine stand. As of now, my buddy and I are looking to continue Friday night instead of paintballing and Saturday if needed. By then my new UDP should be here (hoping) and we might be able to finish the reassembly and put it back in the car. Hopefully we can get it sealed the RIGHT way this weekend and prevent a leak.

this sounds crazy but what is the bed plate gasket...

it's the little pink o-ring that is placed between the bed plate and the block that is no larger than a half dollar...maybe even a quarter. if you forget this one little o-ring during a rebuild, you are sure to have an oil leak down the road because that gasket ensures proper sealing between the bed plate and the block. some of the other guys could explain it better, but that is the basic principle of it.
