Well.. the TOB wasn't the root cause.

The background of this loud ass knocking noise:
Replaced bearings (though nothing indicated they needed to be changed), no metal shavings, no smoke, TOB on backwards (fixed), no metal shaving in tranny as well.

It seems to only happen at rpms higher than 1-2k? Also it doesnt sound "consistent", more like some thing is loose in there and flies around randomly. Aside from that, I don't know what else to say.

It's tough when you gotta listen on the computer but I don't hear any base sound like if it was rod rap. I suspected that at first but....kinda lots of treblish noise like it's in the bellhousing. You say you pulled the rod bearings and they were fine? No shavings when you pulled apart the tranny and block? It could be at the wrist pin area, but, again, usually more base type sound. Is it coming from the bellhousing area? Is anything hitting the flywheel/PP? It's a whole lot easier to listen to live. Why don't you stop over and I'll listen to it then :shrug

check the cam caps and check the flywheel for a crack or lose bolt

Thanks for the info on the rod knocking type sounds, I've never heard rod knock before but it just doesn't add up to be bearing pobs. I've checked the bellhousing and I thought for sure it the tob on backwards, but nope. Checked the valve components and rod caps and that's all fine.


It sounds like something is getting caught up and banging around. In the water lines? Hitting the water pump? Maybe i'll pull the lower rad pipe and check the teeth.

Nothing adds up.
NO SHAVINGS ANYWHERE. It does heat up quite fast as well. I wonder if it is the water pump...

Lord almighty! What a horrible sound.

Have you taken apart the trans yet, Nick? When I lost my input shaft bearing in the tranny, I got a noise not too unlike that, although much less rapid. I was driving the car the day after we patched the bell housing from the clutch coming apart three days after a seven month delayed rebuild, so I wasn't really getting on it, but let me see if I can't get a video up...

silly but anything hanging around the belts or any pullies? your cam gears look ok?

What's your starter look like? Almost sounds like the gear got hung up or something. Meh, that's probably too far fetched to happen in a DSM.

I re thread locked the flexplate to cluch bolts and the problem ceased. Fucker.... I wonder if the torque of the engine was pushing the clutch out towards the bellhousing? Maybe pushing it towards the engine under load which pushed the bolts back into the block causing the noise...

Oh man. You just dodged a major bullet right there, my friend. That's what leads to the damage seen in the following excessively huge pictures. (Remove the space between the P and G.)

1. Free-wheeling clutch became something of a circular saw, cutting a hole into the transmission. Scary as hell to have all your trans fluid drain out of the bellhousing onto your downpipe at 45mph and not be able to shift gears.

This also happened to me on the third day after we got her running after seven months of downtime. Sad thing was, I think the shock to the transmission internals of that modular clutch going crazy on the input shaft lead to the input shaft bearing failing another three days later.

My transmission has never sounded the same. :P Fifth gear has a sort of whine to it when cruising. Right in that sweet spot between accelerating and decelerating. I suspect the whole thing will grenade one day, but who knows...
