105017, 2GNT/SRT4 Swap - Loaded Question
Posted by tahleel, Jul-01-07 07:55 PM
I'm in the midst of buying another 2G. If some of you guys didn't know, my old username was "tacoman123", and I first registered maybe in 2001/2002. My first DSM was a 2GNT, and a few turbo models later, I came back. I am looking to build a newer daily driver.

I found a 98 GS ATX for sale. It needs a wiring harness. I also found a 2003 SRT4 motor w/trans, wiring harness and alternator/power-steering pump/AC compressor, etc. I had a few questions about the motor swap itself.

I forgot if the 2GNT had a rear engine mount, or a tranny mount. But would the stock rear mount line-up with the engine/trans? What about the front engine mount? I read that I would have to cut/weld a new passenger side mount, is that true? What about the oilpan? Does the oilpan clear the K-member?

Now, the car has an auto transaxle. As far as the trans mounts, would the SRT4 trans line up to the auto trans mounts? Which axles would I use? How will I be able to get the speedometer to work?

I am going to have to modify the wiring harness, so I'd rather go for a Megasquirt set-up, so lets take engine management out of the question.

I am assuming that there won't be space issues. Our intake manifold is pretty big. I think the exhaust manifold/turbo would be able to clear. I want to use as many OEM parts are possible. I want to use the stock turbo to reduce cost, as I'm not looking for a monster set-up, just a quick daily.

Any tips, ideas are welcome.

Thanks again guys,

-Tahleel

Rear, driver, and front all connect to transmission so they are fine.

You have to do something for a passenger side mount - you may be able to use the SRT4 mount, the half that attaches to the block, and rig something up that connects to that.

The downpipe runs right thru the oil pan. Not sure of the K-member. If you're going to use a head from the SRT4, then you may be able to use the pan, don't know anyone who has gone that route.

I doubt the t850 lines up to the mounts of the auto trans. Good luck with axles for that. And speedometer. I know of no one that uses an SRT4 trans.

If you're using the entire long block from an SRT4, and the trans too, you may be the first. Tell us how it goes.

If its simply the passenger mount, then simply welding a mount shouldn't be too difficult.

From what I recall from years ago, this was the main problem with swapping in a 2.4L block into a 2GNT. Modifying an oilpan to fit can get pretty expensive. As far as the exhaust pipe running through the oil pan, that seems pretty peculiar. I'm assuming that you're talking about the 2GNT 420A. On the SRT4, the exhaust is on the back (between engine and firewall), so I don't see why it should even cross the oilpan. Would a 2GNT 420A oilpan and/or pick-up work in the SRT4 long block without modification?

I'd ideally like to go with a SRT4 trans, as it obviously bolts-on into the SRT4 block, but also because it is capable of holding the power of the SRT4 (and a moderately modded SRT4). If a SRT4 trans will not work, I guess I'd opt for a 2GNT MT trans, as it seems like a more viable option (ease, and driveability).

Has anyone ever used the whole SRT4 longblock (excluding trans)? I've always read about using the 2.4L Cloud cars' motor, with SRT4/PT pistons/rods, but has anyone used the SRT4 long block and head?

Not that I know of. There have been discussions about swapping in the SRT-4 engine before and basically, it comes down to not being worth it for the money for the amount of work you would have to do. If I were you, I would just look into dropping in the 2.4L from a cloud car and rebuild it with the SRT-4 internals like you mentioned. Regardless, there have been plenty of threads about this topic. I typed in "srt-4" into the search with the "subject only" option and found some good discussion threads.

doesn't work, you'd have to scoot your firewall back 5-6 inches IIRC to get the turbo to fit after the motor wass moved back to fit the intake up front, this has been covered extensively in the advanced tuning section, the bottom end will work fine, the top will not fit. do not pass go do not collect $200

Edit: also the trans is too long IIRC

Holy shit. It's tacoman. Sup dude.

You're pretty much SOL on this idea, boss. Seriously, if it were even remotely easy, this place would be bigger than Tuners by now. With all the strokes out there bending up skittles like they are, SRT4 engines aren't as hard to come by as they were initially.

If you could get the engine and trans to fit in a 2G bay, you'd have issues connecting it all to the wheels. Motor mounts are relatively easy to set up where needed, but if you can get this similarly-sized engine into the bay, the increased size of the transmission is going to cause axle nightmares. Will you be able to line up the diff with the hubs? Where are you going to find axles for this project?

You know as well as anyone else who's been around the block a few times, anything's possible with enough money, but this idea has scrap yard written all over it. I don't recall why you couldn't use the SRT4 block, but you CAN use the SRT4 internals on pretty much any other 2.4L. It's less than $200 for rods/pistons altogether from the dealership, so building up a nice 2.4L on your own can be cheap.

Don't forget to check the BST section, man. Gilee_8 is parting out a relatively mint car right now and likely has the entire harness available if you wanted it. HRC is even selling the engine out of the shop car for $3000 if you wanted to go balls out.

Good to see you back around, man. Good luck with things.

Hey Driggs,

Its good to see you too bro. As far as the motor, I found a local one with 10K miles with trans for $1500. Comes with trans, powersteering pump, A/C compressor, alternator, wiring harness, and ECU. Seems like a really good deal, and I wish it would work with minimal modifications. But alas, it won't, so I decided to scrap the whole idea.

As far as the 2.4L swap from the Cloud cars with SRT4 internals, it still seems like a viable option, but I do not want to go down that road as of yet.

I'll be doing some more research and maybe come back to the idea.

Thanks again guys!

get the drivetrain and a 2g neon
almost perfect and direct fit and very sleeper

Hey Alain..
You still making manifolds? I sold one of yours about two years back. Goood shit. :D

nah i gave up 2 years ago
too much cheap products on the market specially on Ebay ruined the reputation of custom log manifolds, cast manifolds under $300 and the canadian dollar getting strong cut way too much into my profit margin also

take my flanges for example mine were made on a CNC machine with pockets milled around the ports so the pipes could sit inside the flange and not on top of the flange, the bottom side was milled to be true with a flying wheel cutter and the metal was 1/2 inch thick they cost around $90 to produce
and on the other side you have $20 flange on ebay made with laser cutter no machining done on them on 1/4 or 3/8 metal

and makers using the cheaper and thinner schedule 20 pipes while I was using thicker and more expensive (and harder to work with ) schedule 40

so in the end it was too hard to explain why my manifolds where $150 more expensive than the ones from the infamous "motofool" and when the secret maker of "motofool" manifold dissapear I was laughing really hard because "motofool" turn to me to make the last 4 of his manifold at MY price :)

The SRT4 block and all '03+ 2.4 blocks for that matter have slightly different oiling passages so modifications would be required for the 2GNT head to work with it. Neon guys have adapted older DOHC heads to fit the newer 2.4 but it is extra work.

The crank indicator is also quite different on the '03+ blocks so you would have to run custom electronics such as Megasquirt because your stock electronics can't run that engine...
