correct me if I'm wrong guys, but aren't the valve seats just cut directly into the head? this isn't like older cars that had hardened seats pressed into the head.

I called a machine shop several years ago to get my head fitted for the +1mm valves and they said the same thing, "we'll have to find the oversized valve seats." I was puzzled because I thought they were cut into the head as well.

After examining the head, I decided not to call that machine shop back...

What does this mean exactly?, I might be doing a performance rebuild on my head, and want to know if this place knows its shit, even though I dont.

I think he means he's right about the head not having replaceable valve seats.

I may be wrong, and typically always question myself on some things, but look at this pic:

That was the old head from my second 2gnt. If you look at the missing valve, the seat looks to be a part of the head and not a separate piece of metal.

if the valve seats are too trashed for them to open them up another 1mm for the over sized valves you will need to replace the whole head
A good machine shop will know how to do it the use a cone shaped stone bit to open the valve seat up and then do a 3 or 5 angle valve job to ensure proper seating/seal

So that little angled ring that is machined used to be a whole other piece that used to be put in there? That looks like something i could do with the Fadal4020 at my schools CNC lab. I guess it just means less parts but more machining.

yeah, on the porsche I have to be careful and watch the cyl head temps cause it's got pressed in valve seats. If the heads get overheated the warping can drop out the seat and cause similar effects to losing a timing belt

Edit: hey styles, grammar and punctuation will take you far around here! :thumbsup

It would be alot cheaper to just replace the head.
