i am looking at a stock head rebuilt just 20k miles ago, what are the chances that this head would need to be decked again, can i check it for flatness myself or need to take it to a machine shop, and what is the allowable tolerances?

take it to a machine shop and have it checked in a fixture to be sure. If you look over under the bad sellers page, you'll see what could happen. I was sold a head that was supposed to have been in good shape with low mileage on it. Regardless, if it has been used at any point on another motor, it should be checked and clearanced since being made of aluminum.

I just brought my head in to have the exhaust guides put in. I have about 9k on a rebuild (currently doing an upgrade rebuild). I'm having the shop check it anyway. No reason, just good prectice. If you have a regular shop theu probably won't charge you. If not a regular they might charge you a slight fee.
