104577, Engine Swap 420A for 420A
Posted by eclipsegs96, Jun-04-07 06:35 AM
Hello, I am new to this forum,

does anyone know where i can find a good document with screen shots and such explaining how to remove a 420a motor. I have the shop manual, but sometimes that can be hard to follow

thanks

all the motor work is already done, but this was cool to look at. I am looking for something that shows step by step the best way to get the 420a out.

Wondering if i could do something different that would save time or make it a little easier

I would first undo all the wiring connected to the engine, next pop the axles out, unbolt the down pipe, then hook it up to the lift, and un bolt the motor mounts. Pull out the engine and transmission as one unit, that is a lot easier then trying to work with just the engine.

the engine comes out ok by itself if you remove the crank pulley. even easier if you can get everything high enough after is to drop the engine tranny assembly out the bottom. hook up a cherry picker and free the engine/tranny assembly from the car and drop the whole thing on a furniture dolly, roll out from under the car! this works best with a bunch of blocks to stack on jacks and very big jackstands. usually you have to get the back end of the car in the air too. the reason this is actuallly easier is that's how the whole thing was put in the car originally.

I completely disagree. No need to pull the tranny when you can just pop off the access cover and unbolt the flywheel from there. Then you don't have to deal with the axles, trying to pull it at an angle, or having to get all the motor/tranny mounts out.

that's why I said it's much easier with the crank pulley off.

It's shameless the way you two flirt. :P

I've pulled the engine+trans, just the engine, and just the trans. In my experiences, the longer you can leave the trans in the car, the less scars you will have.

-Remove the battery and intake stuff.
-Drain the oil and coolant.
-Depressurize the fuel rail.
-Disconnect the wire harness and tuck it out of the way.
-Ubolt the PS/AC and lay them over the side of the bay.
-Remove the crank pulley - underdrive or other.
-Remove the header/exhaust manifold.
-Get under the car and drop the cross member, then...
-Remove the access panel to the starter drive ring/clutch.
-Remove the (4) bolts that hold those together.
-Support engine on hoist.
-Remove bolts holding block to trans.

That's more or less it. It's been at least 2 years since I've been that deep in a 2GNT, but if you go that route, you should be able to figure out any problems that show up.

Good luck.
