104526, oil explodion....
Posted by ivan300, Jun-01-07 06:29 PM
Well i was driving to work from lunch at about 80mph. I was driving the car pretty hard. I got to a red light and i pressed the brakes and the pedal sank to the floor i barely stopped in time. Then i noticed smoke coming from my left tire (from the driver’s position). I pulled over right after that. I looked at my tire and there was oil all over the tire caliper and brakes. I did a gsx brake upgrade the prior week. So I assumed I messed something up. I opened the brake fluid reservoir and it was full. So it is not the brakes. When I press the brake pedal it is firm and does not sink to the ground anymore.

I opened the hood and the whole right side of my engine bay was covered in oil, the tranny, battery intake everything. I looked over everything I could not find the location of the leak.

I checked everything. Clutch fluid is full, power steering fluid is full, Tranny Is covered in oil. I inspected it from above and below there are no signs of damage. I opened the cap and oil came out. Crap so it’s not the tranny.

My car is turbo’d and I did all the work myself. I checked the oil dipstick and it looked fine it was in the recommended range. I figured the next thing would be the oil feed line. I checked in the back of the block everything is dry over there.

The only thing I can think of is. I have my breather open. Could oil in these large amounts come out of the breather?
There was no sound no noticeable loss of power when this happened.

This is a example of where it happend( This is not the actual pic)

Possibly your turbo oil supply line connection on the back of the block.

This was definitely an explodion.

thats what i figured too, but the whole back of the block is dry. the ss line is not damaged what so ever. It looks like the only possibility is the breather. i was taking a sharp right turn if that makes any difference.

im thinking the sharp right turn plus some blow by could cause some oil to go up the breather. Does it go down to the oil pain?

this sounds pretty tricky, I would say to check the vacuum hose to the brake booster, I don't know if you would be getting that much blow by, but who knows, you could try running a catch can, just fab one up with a coke can or something. if you say your feed line is still good. is the car running good now?

Did you bleed the brakes when you installed the GSX upgrade? The fact that the pedal went all the way to the floor wouldn't happen if your breather tube was blowing out oil. And the fact that you just messed around with the brakes last week is odd timing dontcha think? start with the obvious and work your way from there. Are you sure it is engine oil in the engine bay and not brake fluid?

taste them.

Start with cleaning the engine down and looking for leaks when the engine is running. Use spell check please

alright just got the car towed home.

It is not the brakes as i explained the oil sprayed onto the left rotor. the brake reservoir is full, and the brakes are firm. if there was a problem with the brakes the pedal would sink to the ground.

It looked like at least 0.5L of oil was sprayed in the engine bay

Show me a path through the engine bay where engine oil could spray onto the drivers side rotor. unless it curved down around the transmission, around the plastic mud guard, around the control arms, up and over the brake backing plate and onto the rotor. I guess it could happen that way. Magic bullet imo.

Hmm. You are confusing even me...

Either way, good luck with your problem.

Im not sure how it happened there is oil everywhere and the only place where i could have came from is the engine. The brakes work fine now, if there was a hole or something in the lines they would not hold the pressure.

I just turned on the engine and it idles fine, no weird noises. and i ran a compression test i got 180 on all 4. before i turbod it i had 200 on all 4.

im still thinking its the pcv/breather. im gonna wash the engine bay and make a catch can and ill go for a small drive to see what happens.

I apologies if i sound confusing. im posting this in a rush.

Is your breather filter soaked with oil? If not, the oil did not come from there.

It doesnt appear as though he has a breather on his VC in the picture he posted anyway.

EDIT: N/m. it says not actual pic.

What kind of line are you using for your oil feed line to the turbo? If you have a pinhole sized hole it would act like a firehose spraying hot oil everywhere.
Degrease the engine bay
have someone rev up the motor or watch the engine bay while do you it. Check for leaks.
Run your VC breather to a catch can anyway since you are turbo'ed.

here are some pics

I cleaned everything and made a catch can. i went for a ride and everything is fine. i dont get it haha

"and i pressed the brakes and the pedal sank to the floor i barely stopped in time. "

thats because of the oil on the rotors, after it all burned off the brakes worked perfectly

I still don't quite understand how the oil seeped into the brakes that bad.

Ditto, doesn't make sense. Never heard of oil leaking so bad it gets on the rotors.

It doesn't take much oil to oil up the brake rotors. Try it yourself :wavy (that's me waving bye bye to your car, lol. Damn, I need a diet).

well i ve been driving the car all day yesterday and today. I drove it pretty hard a couple times with no problems. the catchcan is empty everything else is normal.

I dont know why this happend.

I dont know about you but if my car was barfing up oil I might take it easy on her until i knew what was up.

You do, because you cracked a piston. Try a compression test and I'm sure you'll find one of them much lower than the rest.
