Hi all, haven't been around in a while, but I just got word that my 2gnt might be dead :(

Here are the issues...when trying to go forward in Drive, you have to give it a lot of gas before it moves (high rpm's). It doesn't seem to want to move at all when in Reverse. Fluid levels seem to be okay, although the fluid is very old. Does this sound like the auto tranmission is dead?

I'm guessing this would be expensive to fix...anyone have any ballpark figures? Unfortunately, if it is the auto tranny (and not just a fluid issue), I'm probably going to sell the car. Thanks for your help!

No, its not dead. I have had same problem with a 1993 Cavalier ATX.

Let me gues you have to put in Neutral REV. it and pop back in drive.

Right, my old CAVie did the same thing, it's not dead.

First, I would change your Transmission Filter, sorry I don't believe in keeping the same filter all year round. Pardon, but this would cause alot of buildup in transmisson and might why you this problem.

I'll look into more for you, hope you haven't sold it yet. I think this is an easy fixer, don't give up.

Why sell the car? You can replace the transmission for a couple hundred dollars. I think a rebuild runs about $1000. Heck if you live near Louisiana I have an auto that I would let go for about $200. The electronics in it kinda suck and when it gets cold it doesn't want to shift until it heats up.

I've looked,could be your shift linkage but change your fluid/trans. filter too. This would be great time to have your transmission rebuilt,stronger bullet proof. There's a Section, in MODS/Tech info. also, try Info/Specs. do a search too.

Try www.foxautosalvage.com their tranys. are 500 or so. Add that better rebuilt kit to it or add it to your current one.

Hey thanks for everyone's help here! Sorry I couldn't get back to check this sooner...basically, I guess it comes down to whether I need a new/rebuilt transmission. Could it simply be just an issue with the filter and the fluid?

Mainly, it behaves like a manual tranny with a badly slipping clutch (must rev it a lot before it will even move). No reverse either. I guess I'm thinking the car is 11 years old, and I don't want anymore problems with it down the road...I just don't want to invest too much in trying to fix the tranny issue, as something else might break afterwards. Know what I mean? This car has already been through a lot :) I guess I just want a reliable car that I don't have to keep worrying about, so I'd like to see if I can fix it for cheap without replacing the tranny. Thanks for any other suggestions or thoughts!

804, does the car get driven often? I'm wondering if it's due to that. Automotive parts that are designed to see lubrication on a regular basis will do a whole host of funny things (rust, seals degrade) when the car is left alone for extended periods of time

swap in an mtx. I figure 800- 1k in parts depending what deals you can find = much better results then rebuilding auto.

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. ez, yes the car has been for sale forever :) Actually, I sorta gave up on selling it after a few months, so it sat for a couple of years undriven. But it's been daily driven for the past year and a half.

Here's something interesting I just discovered...with the car on, and the transmission in the Neutral setting, I couldn't push the car. It felt like the transmission was really in Park or something. If I turned off the car, then I was able to push it with the auto in Neutral. Does this sound like the torque converter? How much would that likely cost to fix?

The main thing is, I really don't have the time to take care of this as I live out of state now. If it's an easy fix, I can get it taken care of. But if it's more major or costly, I'd rather call it a loss and sell it to someone willing to take the time to fix it. In talking to a mechanic our family trusts, he doesn't seem to think it's a fluid issue...seems to think it is some component of the transmission that is broken. Thanks for any more help guys! Things like this are a good part of the reason i will NEVER own a car with an ATX again.

My 91 mazda 626 had the same problem and then wouldn't go into any gear after a while.

My mom's 02 buick park ave shudders like hell in 4th.

My dodge caravan (wonder if that motor would fit....kidding) shudders like i'm running 2 mtx jackhammer subwoofers if i give it too much gas starting out.

Then you have to figure in how heavy an automatic tranny is. I rarely select the right gear the first time. That's sad it takes me a couple seconds to find the right gear, but it's a pain in the ass too.

5 speed wins hands down. I dont care what kind of traffic i'm in, i love it. Makes me feel one with the car and they're damn easy to fix compared to an atx.

Drop in a 5 speed and quit being a pussy.

LOL, a 5-speed is out of the question as I don't even drive this car. My WRX is a manual if that makes you feel better :)

I just don't really have the time/energy to invest too much into this. I'm leaning towards trying to sell it, if I can find anyone that wants it. It's a 97 gs with 92k miles. Custom paint job, ported/milled head, and some other minor mods. You guys think someone would buy this off of me? Blue book is anywhere from 5-6k depending on condition (and obviously I would get less than this due to the transmission issues).

So um, if you were to part it out.....um....

How much would you be willing to let the door handles, the hatch shocks, that plastic thing that goes over the driver side seat slide handle and head go for.....shipped? If you're not parting it out, nevermind. I'll just go sulk somewhere.
