I have a kinda stupid question. Bear with me. I'm new to these cars, and am not sure how the mods are laid out.

I have the stock airbox now. I removed the silencer from the bottom, but I know it's not much. I'm thinking a better intake would help. But I don't know whether to go short ram or CAI (with valve, of course).

I have a tranny cooler mounted behind the bumper hole on the driver side of the car. Is this in the way of where the CAI will be?

If so, is it worth it to change to a short ram?

Will either hurt my fuel economy?

I never really noticed much on my short ram intake from the butt-o-meter, but my fuel economy is usually around 2-3 mpg better, most likely the lower restriction. definitely louder at WOT. I have seen and felt cars with CAI that were quicker with them, mostly due to reduced intake temps, don't know about the fuel economy on those but I would think that with the lower temps and restriction you'd see even better fuel economy. for simple power the best thing I've done was changing out my muffler for a high flow magnaflow unit. definite noticable power improvement on acceleration, didn't see any noticable fuel economy gains/losses tho.
also a tranny cooler shouldn't hurt a CAI that I know of, tranny's don't get near as hot as engines do, moving the intake away from the hot exhaust should always help, plus IIRC the CAI's for our cars go straight down from where the airbox was which is just open space in the engine bay

CAI is a waste of time and money. You might get cooler air for a few minutes while the engine bay is still cool, but you're taking air off filthy, dirty road surfaces, and pulling it through a nice, long pipe that's being heated to more than 120* by the engine.

*The biggest benefit to replacing the stock airbox is a reduction in restriction. Intake temp variations are negligible at best. Besides, if you wanted the best air charge, you'd pull it in off the hood, where there is a good, laminar flow while moving.

Pick up an Ebay shortie and a K&N filter. Then build a box a la Corbin to isolate the filter from the rest of the bay and put a Naca duct in the hood to draw fresh air across the filter from above. That would be ideal.

BUT, think about where you want to ake your car. Do you want it to be a terror on the road or is it for show purposes? Turbo or no? Think about this before setting your mind on one over the other.

Yeah, I know. I figure for $40, I can put a short ram on and then sell it for at least $25 if I decide to change soon.

Let me, guess the piping goes around the front your raditaor right, if Not then I both a Tranny cooler and oil cooler. This was already on my Elcipse when I bought. Yeah..

Sure, I agree with the Admin, dude with Heat temps. My opinion
SR intakes are for show. Its not the way I go, I prefer to be the Terror on the streets and have people turn their heads which happend quite abit. Maintence, is a snap. used K & N recharge kit 9.99 at Advance not bad. As, for saving gas I strongly believe its how the drive is hard on the throttle, than you eat up alot of gas.

As, for high engine temps. Go to parts and for 5 bucks buy REDLINE WATER WETTER its for the radiator/engine temp. Everyone should use the it does help out alot.. Get mags. out and read up on them

very true, very true, the easier you are on the fun pedal the less fuel you use (but you don't have as much fun) best mileage i ever saw in my 2g was close to 40mpg I didn't smile much if at all. worst I've seen was closer to 18mpg I smiled a TON! (track day)

as for fuel economy, the whole intake never really did too much for me, I got the best millage out of my stock air box with a K&N filter, an exhaust system really helps with MPG too, there was a study someone did on here it was really good, he noticed the most increase with MPG when he did a cat back

Hey Dale, I think you may have misunderstood the original post. I believe that he has an aftermarket tranny cooler mounted in the bumper opening on the driver's side, that he thinks might get in the way of a CAI. In the center bumper cut-out we have power steering lines so they can cool, and then the ac cooler behind that with the stock tranny cooler integrated in the radiator(auto), I believe those were what you were describing.

True, Why would this guy put tranny cooler on the driverside isn't supposed to be in front the radiator, the oil cooler is supposed on the driver'side.

I would post a pic of it but its pretty bad the lines,stock trans.cooler and radiator all needs to be replaced. The original ownerhad my car in New Mexico, the sand and caused it to rust real bad. But its looks like surface rust, it could be sanded down repainted with rustoluem.

"Supposed to be" nothing, smart mouthed prick. No need to be a jerk. I put it there because it was easiest. It's not "supposed" to go anywhere. Jeez, no need to be a total a-hole about things. It doesn't "go" anywhere. I put it where it was easy since it is easy to move and I didn't feel like removing the bumper at this time to get it in front of the condenser.

Yes, it would be in the way of CAI, and you'll have about and one or two inch between the filter cone and the trans cooler.
I think the hole your talking about is next to the fog light bezel
( that curve ) Thats where my filter cone for my Injen CAI is located.

I see what you mean by having it in an easy spot to get for cleaning etc. Not too familar with maintence of trans coolers, will if yours has a drain plug(like a radiatar) I would make measurements and see I would be able to unbolt it being so close to the filter.

But, if have it next to the fuse box along the side?? I would just keep it there. I figured that trans cooler needs to be in a location where get alots of air. This, is what I meant by having it in front of the radiator, but its only of matter of opinions. Yours only counts cause its yours,and you work on it.

No, I'm not a smartass ricer.. You need to calm down guy, everyone has the same problems too. We all have the same car with similar issuses, just have patience.
