ok I have the write ups im getting the tools. Any advice this will be the first time I have done this im getting aem cam gears new water pump and thinking a light weight udp and I want to swap to the mechanical tensioner(sp) what am I missing. I know this job is a bitch but I am up to it.

ps sears is having a sale on there tools 0-100 torque wrench for 26.00. good deal?

Ya I have that bookmarked, scares me. but I might give it a try whats it cost to buy the puller any idea.

rent the chrysler puller. If the UDP you get is a 2 peice (aren't they all?) then you wont need the puller nearly as often.

Use Dino's suggestion. Pull the valve cover off and there is a spot in the cam that a 1/4" drive extension fits in perfectly. After Dino suggested it I went and tried it. I just forgot to take pictures.

I have timed my car several times and must say untill I did that, I dont think I ever got it right.

Part of the reason I love my car, is this site it never fails me.

If you are installing AEM cam gears make sure you line them up with the stock cam gears to make sure they are marked correctly. Some of the earlier AEM cam gears came marked for neons.

I don't know if I would trust a $26 torque wrench.


You will also need one that measures inch pounds to tighten the bolts holding the cams in place. The inch pound would be a different wrench all together and not one that measures both.

that was where i ran into a problem. autozone carried one but min in/lb was like 50, and the ft/lb was like 10 min. so i just borrowed a snap on 1/2 in. drive and torqued down to 10 ft./lbs. close enough to the torque spec listed in the manual. also the 1/2 in. drive torque wrench i got from autozone wouldn't torque 10 ft.lbs. i tested it when i borrowed the snap-on.

Most of the larger ones don't go that low. I had to borrow an inch one from a mechanic friend. I heard that the auto parts store rent them. Even with it I broke 2 of those cam bolts when I did my head gasket last month. Luckily I was able to back both out.

I trust Advance Ampro tools than Autozone, Autozone charges too much and sales people are idiots in my area.

Where in beep did you guys Find Those AEM Cam gears. Every place I called example Summitracing/Advance they all give me the cold shoulder and tell there's no parts like for 420a motors only turbo 4g63, I just tell them yeah right whatever.

I'm looking to replace my Cam Gears, UDP. Newbie question, the drive belt/ power steering belts go on the UDP correct. Mine would need replaced, I have Dayco OE belts drive/pwr. My H2O pump/timing belt was replaced last year Jan.06 when I bought my car, had 104 on the odom now it has 128. My mechanic told me H20 pump/timing belts need to replaced evry 80.000 miles is this True. I trust him he rebuilt a 1gen Eclipse.

Should I start changing my internals when I start changing my belts a gears and UDp's my engine internals are Stock.

If you buy the parts yourself your mechanic would just charge you for the labor. This is what my guy told me it'll saving u some money.

I have only one other guy besides this mechanic I trust with my DSm, This my step Dad he's a backyard mechanic but he's good, I 've seen change both h20 pump and timing by himself in my mothers 00 Neon. Only problem he had was either the bolt busted for the timing or his wrench. But if I had extra help someone from here I would pay them the labor+case of beer make a weekend out of it :shrug

600 for timing and water pump is the right price any more then he's ripping you off.
