yo, i rebuilt my 420a and had bud's machine port it. I reinstalled the motor and now it won't start. when u turn the key, it clicks like a bad starter, but the starter is brand new. it seems to be a ground issue or something. the one thing i hate to do on cars is electrical wiring. if u r a god at 420a motors and swaps and live in the seattle area, maybe you could ride out this weekend and give me a hand. free beer and burgers if you can, also i own a parts store too, so i can offer a free partial sponsorship for you if u are interested. parts at cost, not a bad deal. gimme a call if you get a chance, i need a little help with this issue, thanks man.

Make sure the Fuel and ASD relays on the firewall by the driver's side are connected securely. Also double check the connectors on your:
A) cam position sensor
B) crank position sensor
C) starter
D) battery terminals (you didn't leave it sitting on the ground, did you?)

Sounds like its a dead bat. If the starter is just clicking and not even trying to turn over. Check the bat.

def not the battery, its a optima red top and it is fully charged; i took it out of my 7g galant and it works fine.

the asd and fuel relays on the back wall, what do the connectors look like and where do they connect to? If they connect to the intake man, i got them connected. i have 2 'T' shaped connectors that were unlabeled by the ds firewall, I assumed they went to the washer fluid reservoir.

my starter done the same thing,tap on the starter with a hammer, it fixed mine.

Good call on testing the battery in another car. I'd try taking the hammer to the starter then. What have you got to lose, right? :shrug

Yeah, it could have been a bad battery, voltage is not as important as cold cranking amps.

Can you explain the "click" any better? Does the engine turn over by hand?

You said you thought it might be a bad ground.

Im thinking that would give the same symptoms as a bad/weak battery? Recheck the grounds and see that EVERYTHING is hooked back up. And not where you 'think' it goes.

The battery came out of my 7g galant, that I drove to the shop before I swapped it out, so its def not a dead batt.

The starter is brand new, along with most of the components inside the ehgine and engine bay, so I doubt its the starter or that smacking it will help.

All of the connections are connected right, they were labeled numerically with a sharpie and masking tape when I pulled the motor. So connecting them to where they actually go instead of where "I think they go" is kinda outa the question.

As for more indepth on the clicking, the motor is not turning over, but by hand it will. When I was installing the flywheel and clutch, the motor was turning and moving freely.

All I can figure is that it would be a bad ground wire or something else in the wiring system. I am not a novice with zero hours experience at the wrench, so pls leave out the smart, one-liners of basic mechanical skill levels. I know it is not the battery, starter and yes, I did remember to hook up the battery terminals.

If you have any serious indepth knowledge or opinions on this prob, pls help me out. If you feel like insulting a rook, look to another thread.

Bingo! the wiring form the battery on our cars is patheticly small, and highly prone to corrosion that you can't see. I had this problem a while back. Just clicking from the starter. took off the battery and tested it, good. took off the starter and tested it, good. PUSH STARTED THE CAR BY MYSELF, fired right up. drove it to the shop i worked at thinking the old security system had freaked out and done some starter kill. completely removed any traces of the old security system, still wouldn't start. my buddy whipped out a razor blade and started cutting open all my cables from the battery, corroded solid. no evidence of corrosion on the outside. We spent the next hour rewiring everything from the battery with monster cable, starter and alternator in 4ga and everything to the fuse block in 8ga. starter kicked the engine over faster than i could believe. Now i have rewired every car I have and have had since with the exception of my subaru.

Hmm? I checked through this thread and I didn't see anything insulting or condescending. The points that they bring up are legitimate points. I've been doing this crap for "nigh on" 30 years now, and everyone does goofy crap sometimes. Just last year I was in a rush and I put my car back together for a race the next day. Couldn't start it. Sparked back on me. I ended up trailering it down to the races and the next morning, in the parking lot, I found out that in my haste, I flipped the battery cables (honda battery is opposite of ours). Goofy shit happens to all. I think they were pointing out possibilities to help you check on things.
