103966, Wheres my oil going?!
Posted by Slimyjr., Apr-20-07 05:53 AM
I don't know if i have a leak(i did find a spot where some oil was dripping, really slow though) or if my car just eats oil like crazy. I'm going to do a compression test to see if that will tell me anything. Before, i had an oil leak where my oil pressure sensor was. Apparently the two ends wouldn't attach to each other so we plugged it. You guys got any other methods of looking for leaks?
TIA!

Clean the engine bay down really good. Then fire it up and let it idle for a spell. Once it's up to operating temps, or you spot a fresh drip, shut it down and get under there with a flashlight to see where, exactly, it's coming from.

That's how I'd roll. :shrug

+1 it may be a small drip when you're idling, but when you're at speed and the case is pressurizing you'd be amazed how quick it can really come out, check your compression too and do the wet test. that should tell you for sure what your issue is

yeah if there are not any drips that look too major one of your piston rigs may be seized up

Per the owner's manual, it is expected that these engines will consume "up to a quart every 3000 miles." *shrug*

Mine seems to go through about 1/2 a quart every 3000 miles, maybe up to a quart. There is always a little less coming out when I change the oil versus what I put in it. But, it always runs like a champ.

If there was any engine I would say to follow changing oil every 3000 miles it is this one. (even if you don't have a "severe duty/usage" where the manual reccomends more than 3000 miles) Keep it filled with fresh oil and it's happy. If you see about a 1/2 quart or so gone after 3000 miles then it's just a 420A I guess.

That said, there are two places the oil can go, it can leak out the engine somewhere (onto the block, into the coolant, somewhere) or it can go out the tailpipe.

One thing to check is the valve cover gasket. I had one car (the old saturn) that had a leaking valve cover gasket and the oil leaked onto the exhaut manifold and was burning up before hitting the ground, leaving virtually no trace. When the car was parked for a good 2 weeks and I opened the hood, guess where I found a whole lot of oil? right on the front of the engine coming from the valve cover gasket and all over the exhaust manifold.

It smoked for a good half hour in the driveway once I started it :)again.
